Illustrations Embracing Diversity, Against Racism

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

DePauw University has had over five racist incidents in the last few weeks, including foul comments left on university property in various locations as well as a student dressed in an offensive costume including the name “blackie”. Students have tried to show support for those being attacked by posting art on social media. The pictures and quotes posted, which were rather intriguing, inspired me to seek other illustrations/posters/art that promote diversity and project anti-racist attitudes. Please share these photos if you wish and continue showing support for peace and unity of all people.

The artist of this illustration said, “Illustration is a way for me to communicate, express and question ideas and ideals. For me, illustration and art is a powerful (political) tool and I want people to reflect on things that we might ignore, such as gender inequality and hidden racism.”

The artist of this poster states,” The poster aims to thought provoke people, showing that race issues are [a] still problem in the fashion industry, even today. I wanted to emphasize that…just casting one ethnic model in a fashion show or campaign is not just a way just to tick a box of ethnic diversity, but they should be respected and admired for their beauty and culture.”

This is directly correlated to the issues on campus. Students of color voiced their concerns at a protest, during which they expressed that they are tired of DePauw University using them as an advertising tool to attract more students of color while not properly caring for their needs and safety.

This poster reminds us that race is merely a social construct and that we are all one race, human.

This illustration shows how your silence makes you complicit. It is communicating that if you are not actively fighting and standing by those who are oppressed, you are contributing to the ongoing oppression.

This illustration is my personal favorite. I believe its message is “F*ck Racism.”
