How to Survive the Indian Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

It’s cool in the morning, but by noon it is blazing hot and you’re sweating through your turtleneck by lunch. This bipolar weather that the Midwest has been experiencing is called an Indian Summer. An Indian Summer is defined by a period of unseasonably warm, dry weather during autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, consisting of sunny skies and above normal temperatures. This last heat wave may be good for a little more tan to brighten you up; however, it’s just been melting the rest of us. Therefore, picking out the perfect outfit to survive the heat is crucial!

This is where one specific article of your wardrobe is desperately needed: the perfect fall jacket. Here’s how to build an outfit around your jacket for this crazy weather. First, either commit to jeans or a comfortable skirt. If you choose pants, try to pick heels, booties, or sandals that are opened toed to balance your temperature, but for a skirt you could put on your Timberlands or high leather boots of your choice. Now, when choosing a top, always go for a basic short sleeve; this way, if you are feeling too hot mid-day you can remove your jacket and free those arms! If that isn’t enough, you can always tie your shirt up and show a little tummy to cool you off. Lastly, select the perfect fall jacket. Something lightweight, but that still has substance to keep you warm on the cold October mornings. If you are in need of purchasing one, choose a neutral color so you can apply it to more outfits not just during the Indian Summer, but when fall decides to show up as well.

Here are a few examples of jackets that would work perfectly during this confusing season. These jackets are all products of Forever21 and are for sale online.

Follow the outfit structure and you should be able to survive this year’s Indian Summer. Stay cool and rock those jackets!
