How to Order Vegan/Dairy-Free at Starbucks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

Starbucks has just recently introduced oatmilk to all of their locations! How exciting is that? Personally I like to order dairy-free when I go to Starbucks.  I love that they have multiple dairy-free/vegan options available. They have also started to slowly incorporate vegan/dairy-free options onto their actual menu which is pretty exciting!

Below I have listed a little guide on how to order vegan/dairy-free at Starbucks! At the end I will also add a couple drink recipes! (:

Here are some of the sauces/syrups that are vegan friendly:

  • Mocha Syrup
  • Mocha Sauce
  • Hazelnut Syrup (Comes in a sugar free version)
  • Toffee Nut Syrup
  • Classic Syrup (Aka Simple Syrup)
  • Vanilla (Come in sugar free version)
  • Caramel Syrup (DISCLAIMER: Caramel Drizzle/Sauce is NOT dairy free)
  • Cinnamon Dolce Syrup (Comes in sugar free version)
  • Pineapple Ginger Syrup
  • Raspberry Syrup
  • Brown Sugar Syrup
  • Peppermint Syrup

Listed here are the toppings that are vegan/dairy free:

  • Cinnamon Soymilk Foam
  • Cold Foam (Disclaimer: Make sure you ask for it with soy/almond/coconut/oat milk)
  • Cinnamon Powder
  • Vanilla Bean Powder

Listed below are the dairy-free milks:

  • Oatmilk
  • Soymilk
  • Almondmilk
  • Coconutmilk
The Classic Black Coffee

I know this is not exactly a “recipe” but if you’re like me sometimes you prefer just a simple black coffee with a splash of almond/soy/oat/coconut milk. If you’re feeling a little on the sweeter side maybe add a pump or as many as you like of any of the flavorings listed above!

A Caffe Latte

When ordering this make sure you ask for no whipped cream. You can get creative with this by adding mocha syrup, toffee nut syrup, sugar free vanilla, or any flavoring you like! (Personally I like to order a grande latte with 2 pumps mocha syrup and 2 pumps of sugar free vanilla w/Soy milk! Hold the whip!)

Hot Chocolate

For this one all of you have to do is swap out the milk for your favorite non-dairy milk, and ask for no whip. If you like it to be sweet you can add in your favorite syrup

Caramel Macchiato

This is one of many classic Starbucks drinks. For this drink you would have to swap out the regular milk for your favorite dairy-free milk and ask for no caramel drizzle!

Matcha Green Tea Latte

This one only requires for you to opt out of the whip and to switch the regular milk to your favorite dairy-free milk!

Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

A drink everyone is currently obsessed with is their new, Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso. This comes with Blonde Espresso, brown sugar, and cinnamon powder that is then shaken and mixed with oatmilk! I have yet to try it, but I’ve heard great things about it.

Chocolate Almondmilk Shaken Espresso

This drink consists of cocoa powder, blonde espresso, and hints of malt that is shaken and mixed with almondmilk! (Review: I have actually tried this drink. I give it a 7/10. Would’ve liked for it to have a bit more of a chocolate flavor!)

Cold Brews

A classic at Starbucks if you want that extra kick of caffeine. Ask for this with a splash of any dairy free milk / dairy free syrups and you’re good to go!

Teas

Here is a list of all the teas that are vegan friendly: Iced Shaken Peach Green Tea Lemonade, Iced Hibiscus Tea Lemonade Iced Green Tea Lemonade. If you don’t want the tea to be super sweet just opt out of the lemonade or ask for it to be unsweetened!

Frappuccinos

Most of their frappuccinos can be altered to be made vegan. Most of them can just be made vegan by asking for no whip and dairy-free milk. A few examples would be the Caramel Frappuccino. You would just need to ask for your favorite dairy-free milk and ask for the caramel syrup instead of the caramel sauce.
