On the Horizon: Spring Break, What are you Wearing?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

As spring break quickly approaches, it is easy to get lost in fantasies of cruising in the Caribbean or soaking up the rays in the Sunshine State. But what does it take to make this year’s spring break everything you’ve dreamed of and more? Besides the perfectly sunny tropical destination, that fit bod you’ve been sweating into shape at Lilly, fruity cocktails and some shirtless man-candy to distract you from reading Cosmo on the beach…what could be more important than what you’re wearing? When you look good, you feel good. Feel great this spring break with a fabulous new wardrobe! Here are the top five must-have looks for Spring 2012

1. The Perfect Swim Ensemble
If you’re vacationing in a warm location, chances are you’ll be spending most of your time soaking up the sun. What better way to perfect your tan than in a gorgeous new swimsuit? Whether you go for a bandeau bikini to minimize tan lines or a one-piece with sexy cutouts for a bit more coverage, you can’t go wrong by following some of this year’s big swim trends.

Try some fun embellishments like ruffles or sequins, bright stripes or colorful floral prints—just be sure to keep it to one or two trends in one suit. A beach ensemble isn’t complete without the right cover-up, so forget anything heavy or tight, and instead opt for a breezy, sheer dress.

2. Nautical Stripes

You can’t do the beach without some sailor-esque stripes. From cute dresses to off the shoulder tops, every outfit can be sweetened up with stripes. With new bright colors and varying widths, everyone can pull off this nautical trend.

3. Bright Colors

Boost your mood even higher than the temperature on the beach with bright additions to your wardrobe. Shorts, tops, dresses and accessories are all brighter and bolder than ever, so don’t be afraid to mix and match colors. For the bolder fashionista, try pairing a bright colored short or skirt with a top in a complementary bright color.

Monochromatic outfits are also big for spring, so start with a bright piece, and pair it with items in different shades of the same color. A bright piece paired with neutrals helps tone down the trend into a more classic look.

4. Tan-Enhancing Whites

In warm weather, the old adage of no white after Labor Day and before Memorial Day no longer applies. Spring break is the perfect time to whip out those white cutoffs and jeans, and sweet sundresses. Not only will the light color keep you cooler in the sun, but also the contrast between your white clothes and tanned skin is ideal for showing off that bronzed glow!

#5: Sandals Galore

Don’t forget to get a pedicure before you jet off for spring break, because all of the top sandal trends will surely show off your toes! From wedges to flats, espadrilles to platforms, and metallics, neutrals and brights, sandals are a must for the beach. The best part is that any of these trends can easily go from day to night. So much for packing light–you’ll want to bring a different pair of sandals for each day of your vacation!

With less than a month before spring break, now is the perfect time to start shopping for all these new trends. Make a day-trip to Indy or start ordering online so you can look as fabulous as you feel during your beach vacation!
