Halloweekend Happenings

As we struggle to readjust back into the college life after a Fall Break filled with sleeping until 2pm and lounging in our PJ’s the rest of the day, we happen upon one of the greatest and most packed weekends at DePauw: Old Gold and Halloweekend. These two mega-holidays for DePauw students simultaneously occurred on the same gorgeous fall weekend, and us kids couldn’t have been happier. If you weren’t already ecstatic about the witty costumes you and your bestie came up with, then you were more than delighted about all the activities this weekend had in store. Let me give you a quick run-down of all this fantastic-ness, if you just so happened to miss this memorable weekend.

Here at DePauw, we like to start our weekends early—and FIJI was just the place. Their Pumpkin Bash on Thursday was all sorts of fun. It included an apple bobbing contest, pumpkin carving, and of course, pumpkin smashing. Its safe to say their event catapulted this Halloweekend into a whole category of its own.

As we finished up our tests, quizzes, and projects, we sprinted into this weekend with high expectations, to say the least. Before the weekend festivities officially began, we welcomed precious little ones into the sororities and fraternities for a good ol’ Greek Street Trick-Or-Treat. Mini-pirates, princesses, hamburgers, and ninjas scurried their little feet inside for some creative cookie decorating and fun. What better way to relive all your childhood memories than seeing that munchkin’s big eyes when you snuck him or her and extra Kit Kat bar?!

After a fright filled night at Phi Psi and other fraternities, many brave souls rubbed the sleep out of their eyes for the Civic Fellows Rake and Run. This event allowed DePauw students to do some good for the great community of Greencastle and get some fresh air.

Since we still needed to get our fix of school spirit in and were already wide-awake from the early morning raking, it was time for the Old Gold crowning and the girls’ soccer game. Students sat on the hill under a crisp, bright blue sky to cheer our girls on in their last game of the season. A thrilling first half with two goals and great saves rounded out, and our Old Gold royalty, Maggie Erzinger and Jared Norman were crowned. It was adorable to watch the alums converse, catch-up, and joke around with their college buddies under the gold and black tent. Not to mention, there were some great treats and Tiger Pride pins!

Don’t worry; this campus didn’t forget it was still Halloween. If you were daring enough, you ventured over to DU and Alpha Phi’s Haunted House. From Harry Potter, to The Ring, to eerie creatures of all kinds—you were sure to find a scare at this house.
If you are someone who wants to give back even more to our community—you were in luck because Sunday was Panhellenic Service Day. Many Greek women united to show Greencastle what the DePauw Greek community is all about.

For those of you who are artsy and love kids, Art Attack was the place to be Sunday afternoon. Kids enjoyed the company and entertainment DePauw students brought while they made crafts and acted silly.

All in all Her Campus ladies, this weekend was one for the record books. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did! Prepare yourselves for the weekends to come—filled with formals and informals, the one and only Monon Bell Classic, and so much more!
