We’ve been back at school for a few weeks now, and the initial craziness of that first month on campus has started to die down. The homemade slip n’ slides are disappearing along with the warmer temperatures, and the all-day porch parties are being traded in for long hours spent at Roy O. As sad as we are to say goodbye to these signs of summer, though, the new free time really has its perks in making us that much more available to find new ways to get involved. Whether you’re hoping to make new friends, find a new hobby, build your resume, or simply just pass the time, DePauw has an organization and an event for you. Here are a few great ideas to help you get more involved!
Social
If you’re looking to meet new people, play some corn hole, and eat your weight in hotdogs and burgers, fall at DePauw is your time to shine. The Dells are always crowded this time of year with fraternity and sorority events, most of which take donations to support charities and local organizations. The events are always crowded and the food is delicious – it’s a perfect combination. You may have made it to Delta Jamma or Tigerstock earlier in the semester, but the Fiji/Theta Bark-B-Q is coming up on Wednesday the 21st in the Dells, and the Building Tomorrow Block Party in Bowman Park is on the 22nd. Stop by and bring friends to support some awesome causes!
Fitness
If your goal is to keep off that freshman fifteen, there are so many more opportunities than the overcrowded elliptical machines at Lily. DePauw offers several student-taught fitness classes that put a great spin on an average workout. And the best part? They’re free to all students. Zumba and Turbo Kick are great ways to put a twist on a generic workout and to discover new music, while yoga classes offer a relaxing way to start your week at 11:40 on Mondays. If those classes don’t sound appealing, you can try spinning, Pilates, even water aerobics. The schedules for each week can be found at http://www.depauw.edu/student/WellnessPrograms/index.asp.
Service
Interested in helping out? DePauw is associated with several service organizations that will put you right in the action. Organizations like Best Buddies help the local community by pairing adults with disabilities with students on campus. Building Tomorrow is an organization that raises awareness and holds fundraisers to help support educational systems in Africa. There are opportunities to tutor, volunteer at local nursing homes, and more. Check out the DePauw Community Service page on Facebook for more information!
Hobbies and Interests
If you’re still looking for ideas, play towards your interests with DePauw’s many student organizations. Trying to become the next Chelsea Handler? Get involved in D3TV. Love to dance? X-Cell is the club for you. The possibilities are endless and geared towards what you love to do. Plus, you get to meet people who are just as interested in your favorite things to do as you are.
Now, when you find yourself bored at home and endlessly stalking Facebook and Twitter, get out on campus and check out the endless options of things for you to do!
