Treat Yourself: 7 Hair Care Products to Invest In

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

One of my New Year’s resolutions this year was to begin investing in beauty and self care products that would significantly improve the quality of my skin and hair. Over the past three and a half months, I’ve had time to try a few amazing hair products that have really transformed my hair for the better. My hair is stronger, thicker, smoother, shinier, and a lot less damaged-looking overall. I would highly recommend any one of these products; I promise that they will make a big difference in your daily routine. You deserve to treat yourself by investing in things that make you happy.

Also, if you haven’t heard, you can have unlimited, free 2-day FLASH shipping with no minimum purchase from Sephora for a year for only $10! That’s definitely worth it to not have to find the time to make a trip to the store every time you run out of something.

Shampoo + Conditioner

Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner for Beautiful Color – $46-48 each

If you’re really in the mood to splurge, I’d recommend this pairing from Oribe. I haven’t bought these yet, but I received some samples of them. It honestly blew me away. The balayage coloring in my hair had so much more dimension, and it was just a lot softer overall.

Hair Perfector

Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 – $28

This product is easily my favorite on this list. The only con is that it takes a little extra time in your morning, but you only need to use it 1-2x a week. You apply a generous amount to towel dried hair, leave in for at least 10 minutes, and then hop back in the shower to rinse out with shampoo and conditioner. I noticed a HUGE difference after just one use.

Detangler + Heat Protectant

Aveda Brilliant Damage Control – $21

This spray simultaneously detangles and protects your hair from heat and other irritants. This is the first product I put on post-shower after I towel dry my hair. I buy mine at the Aveda salon across from the DePaul church!

Styling Products

Morrocanoil Smoothing Lotion – $32

After detangling and protecting, I use one pump of this blow dryer smoothing lotion from Morrocanoil. It helps re-hydrate your hair and calm the majority of frizz that can occur when blow drying. Side note – I’ve found it makes a big difference if you blow dry your hair on a low setting instead of a high one. It might take longer, but your hair will thank you for it.

Morrocanoil Treatment – $12 – $44

After the lotion, I apply one pump of the Morrocanoil Treatment Oil to my hair, avoiding the roots. This stuff has so many benefits. This product is a great one to start with if you want to begin building your collection. Plus, the biggest bottle will last you for such a long time.

ALTERNA HAIRCARE Bamboo Smooth Kendi Oil Pure Treatment Oil – $25

I apply this right after the Morrocanoil Treatment. Then, I brush out my hair and blow dry on low while styling with a brush.

Now I can’t imagine my morning routine without these life savers. While using all these products consistently might sound high maintenance, I actually find myself having to deal with my hair a lot less throughout the day. Now it actually behaves because it is so much healthier! In addition, while some of these products might seem a bit pricey, it’s important to consider how long one container will last you. It’s usually at least a couple months. I find that it’s worth spending a little extra on hair products you use everyday because let’s be honest – a good hair day = a good day.
