Free Things To Do In Chicago During Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

Spring is one of the best times of the year in Chicago because the weather is great (most of the time), and the flowers are starting to bloom. But, after a very long winter, DePaul students just don’t know what to do with their lives when it gets warmer outside. Because of that, here is a list of free things you can do during the spring in Chicago:

Museums

  • The Art Institute of Chicago allows any DePaul student to get in for free, no matter the day or time! Just show them your ID card!

  • The Adler Planetarium has various free days throughout the year, and the next one is coming up soon on April 22.

Flower Conservatories

  • The Garfield Park Conservatory is free every day of the year, and has many rooms with different species of flowers and plants.

  • The Lincoln Park Conservatory is right next door to the Lincoln Park Zoo and is also free. It has four main display houses of plants, so bring your camera!

The Zoo

  • Lincoln Park Zoo is a staple of Chicago and is walking distance from the Lincoln Park Campus! It’s a free place to view over 1,000 unique animals such as polar bears, gorillas, birds, reptiles, and more!

Navy Pier

  • Navy Pier is a great place to go during warm weather because half of it is outside. Walk along the pier and view the skyline, or go shopping inside at the many food venues and shops!

Beaches

  • North Avenue Beach is a good walk from the Lincoln Park Campus, and it’s a great place to hand out with friends even if it’s not warm enough to swim! Rent volleyballs from the Ray or ride bikes on the path by the water!

Parks

  • Oz Park is right next door to campus and is a relaxing place to stop after class. You can hang your hammock on the trees and watch the dogs run around!

  • Millennium Park hosts many various free events during the spring, such as book clubs, nature walks, and yoga! View the full list of upcoming events here: https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/millennium_park8.html

  • Maggie Daley Park hosts a lot of really cool events that cost money, but there are still free thing you can do. Bringing roller blades and bikes are good options because there are a bunch of paths that connect this park with Millennium Park. Maggie Daley also has a fun play park with slides and climbing equipment for all ages!

So go out and enjoy the weather! Spring won’t be here forever…
