Don’t Be Sleeping On These Great Halloween Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

It’s October now – hallelujah! And if you care about Halloween at all, I know you’ve been scouring every Halloween movie list out there to make sure you get in all the best ones. I am right there with you, but I have been a little disappointed in the similarity in many of the lists that I have read. I don’t need to be reminded of Hocus Pocus or Halloweentown or even The Exorcist – those are already on my radar for obvious reasons. What I need is to be reminded of those long-forgotten, yet amazingly campy movies. Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to create that list for all of you. Get prepared to time travel, collegiettes!

1. The Little Vampire

Adorable Jonathan Lipnicki is uprooted to Scotland and encounters an entire family of vampires who are cursed to be immortal. This movie also features my OG childhood crush, Rollo Weeks, who plays Rudolph, the most adorable little vampire you will ever meet. Watch the trailer here.

2. Casper Meets Wendy

You’ve heard of Casper the Friendly Ghost, but have you met Wendy? Adorable, pre-Lizzie McGuire Hillary Duff? The friendship between Wendy and Casper is both cute and also strangely sexual… Watch the trailer here.

3. Practical Magic

Okay… so this one isn’t that forgotten, but I don’t think it gets the recognition it deserves! I mean, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman? I could watch this movie a million times and never get sick of it. Watch the trailer here.

4. Jeepers Creepers 1 & 2

If you like scary movies, Jeepers Creepers is a personal favorite of mine. It has a scary bird man, stranded teenagers and a fun little song. Get voluntarily terrified with this one (and its sequel) and sing along with me… jeepers creepers… where’d ya get those peepers? Watch the trailer here.

5. Rocky Horror Picture Show

Rocky Horror is a cult classic and the best Halloween choice for the musical lovers out there. The soundtrack is impeccable, the cast is awesome, and it is even more fun when watched at the theaters surrounded by your fellow weirdos. There’s even a recent remake with Laverne Cox. Watch the trailer here.

These are must-haves for your Halloween bucket list, especially if you are getting a little tired of the same old classics. Happy Halloween and cheers to a grand spooky time! I’ll bring the popcorn.
