This past Tuesday, September 10th the program, “Sex Discussed Here!” gave us a sexual
education which was a lot more interesting than the version from health class. The discussion was
hosted by the Center for Women & Gender Action and created by sex educators Caitlin Rich
and Marshall Miller, who travel all around the country helping people understand more about
sex. They have performed in many different places, from colleges and universities to church
basements. Slayter auditorium was full of both genders and was buzzing with excitement and
curiosity. The extremely important thing they emphasized was the recognition of our school’s
incredible diversity. The sex tips Caitlin and Marshall shared with us related to everyone no
matter if they identity as heterosexual, gay, lesbian, transgender, queer, asexual, and other.
The first part of the show consisted of student volunteers reading off jokes about sex,
which had the audience playing a very interactive part. Between the elongated groans at the
terrible jokes and the burst of laughter at the good ones, the jokes definitely kept the viewers
entertained. One of my favorite jokes went like this: Why do girls fake orgasm? Because guys
fake foreplay.
The performance then transitioned into a conversation about “how to be great in bed”,
a very honest topic that has most likely crossed our minds at least once or twice. Some of the
advice that stood out to me was that a great lover will: educate themselves about sex, stay safe,
not be drunk, and make sure their partner has consented. Caitlin and Marshall made sure to
involve the audience in this segment because who better to answer college sex advice than the
students themselves.
Finally Caitlin and Marshall introduced a question box to the audience, which allowed
everyone to anonymously write down any question about sex. This was definitely the best part of
the show because most of the questions developed great responses from the educators. Overall
this honest, surprisingly educational lecture was a really great event not solely because it
answered tips on how to be a great lover or entertained us with funny jokes. But because “Sex
Discussed Here!” makes all students, no matter their sexual orientation, feel comfortable to talk
about sex and ask questions. I would highly recommend seeing a performance by Caitlin and
Marshall the next time they stop by Denison or a school near you.
