I randomly stumbled upon the work of Caroline Hu a week ago while scrolling through Instagram and I have not been able to think of anything else since. Hu is a 30 year-old fashion designer from China but has been based out of New York since attending Parsons School of Design. When I saw Hu’s dress made of the lightest pink tulle with purple satin ribbon running through and what looked almost to be streaks of different hues of green across the bodice I knew that it was something special. The dress was not even photographed on a model but I still was unable to look away because there was so much emotion flowing through the dress while it sat simply on a metal hanger.
I immediately went to Google to find out more about this emerging designer because I was so shocked that her name and work has not been splashed across all social media, red carpets, and magazines. Hu draws inspiration from oil painting, which she says was a passion of hers from a young age, and this theme is woven into her designs. Her dresses are full of texture and movement and have an almost overwhelming romantic feel to them. They look as if they could be right out of one of the ballerina paintings by Degas. The way Hu explores the female form and plays with different silhouettes to create designs that are a perfect balance between being structured and deconstructed is breathtaking.
With International Women’s Day only 2 days away I wanted to highlight the extraordinary work of Hu. She creates designs that make women feel like beautiful pieces of art and gives them a new avenue to express their emotions and creativity through. Hu is revisioning what commercial wear can be for the everyday woman and I am very excited to see what other stunning designs she creates in the
