My Agenda Obsession

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Denison chapter.

Okay, so I might potentially have a problem.  I’m a tad bit excessively attached to my agenda. I write down everything and essentially live according to my agenda. I’m only slightly kidding, but can you really blame me? Who wouldn’t adore a classic, darling, colorful book to stay organized?

To my credit I don’t have separation anxiety, but this might only be because I carry my agenda around everywhere I go.  It’s always in my backpack, tucked under my arm, or riding in my passenger seat. My life in enclosed within. It’s almost like a diary keeping track of my day to day life.  I have every single exam, homework assignment, and school event as well as every party, dance, and date documented within.  Yea ma’am, every single coffee date, shopping trip, random excursion, and assigned worksheet has been scribbled into my agenda.

To be honest I’m a total snob when it comes to writing in my agenda.  I just about flat out refuse to write in black pen or pencil.  (Unless it’s something very, VERY important and I do not have access to pretty pens.) I have an assortment of fabulous colorful gel pens in pinks, purples, greens, blues, oranges, etc. that I try to always carry with me. Over the years I’ve acquired and consequently lost countless colorful pens which have a tendency of popping up in my car, purse, backpack, desk, or lab. This means I usually always can find one or two.

So… my problem gets worse, each day always had more than one color associated with it.  (Monday is never just written in pink.) Yes, yes, I know it’s silly, but I’ve already admitted to having a problem. It must be pretty!!!

Since I was a freshman in high school I’ve been scouring the Lilly Pulitzer website looking for the ‘prettiest’ Large Agenda every August while buying my back to school supplies.  To me, my agenda was and still is just as important as a pencil.  It takes me about half an hour to carefully consider all my options as this will be for an entire year, and that’s quite an important decision.  The large ones from Lilly Pulitzer really are the perfect size, not too big but big enough to have enough room for my large curly looping handwriting. I have a bookshelf in my bedroom at home filled with past agendas that always make me smile.  I have a tendency to write little notes in the margins, and looking back, they are quite comical.

To make a good situation even better, these agendas come with stickers! Yes ma’am! I don’t know about you– I just think stickers are just darling.  I use them sparingly for special occasions, like my close friends’ birthdays or big events (like visiting my best friend).

Honestly having an agenda is a fun way to stay organized, and I absolutely recommend it to everyone.  Nowadays most people have their calendars plugged into their phones, or computers but I think there is something unique and special about a paper planner.  It is very personal and I equate having a paper planner to the reason I still go to book stores and buy books as opposed to read them online.  It just means more to me, and I enjoy such sentimental facets in my life.  There may be [fine, definitely is] a more cost effective or ‘practical’ ways to stay organized, but mine will forever be a lovely pink agenda!  It’s an easy way to stay on top of work as well as a mini de-stressor when coloring in your future plans.  Furthermore, a big chemistry final seems much more doable when it’s written in big curly pink script.

Come on, a girl can never have too many shoes… or too many agendas!

I adore witty quotes, exploring coffee shops, watching old movies, and spending time with my best friends. I'm a senior at Denison University studying Biochemistry.
