Five Things You Should Never Buy Off-Brand

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Denison chapter.

As a college student, I’m doing all that I can to save money. I’m on the email list of every club on campus because they all had free pizza at their first meetings. How many of those clubs have I attended since? Maybe three. Nothing against any of those student groups, I just don’t have the time to be as dedicated as my stomach wants me to be. But hey, free pizza is free pizza. However, these are five things you should NEVER buy off brand. These are worth the few extra cents.

  1. Skin Care (especially Face Products)

Alright, your skin is your skin. If you want to use a random cleanser because you don’t really react to things, go ahead. HOWEVER, you only have ONE FACE. See a dermatologist and find what products work for you, and STICK to those products. Nothings worse than finding out that the store brand has an ingredient that makes your face angry. If it works, stick to it.

     2.  Certain Foods:

Food, overall, should be something you ignore the brand of because it really doesn’t matter. HOWEVER, anyone who’s opened a bag of Goldfish crackers that aren’t actually “Goldfish” brand, knows that the texture difference can be awful. Same goes for peanut butter. Nothing can replace that sweet, sweet, Skippy taste.

    3. Merchandise

This is just polite. If you go see an artist, whether a band or a drag queen or even a youtuber and decide to wait until you get home to buy merchandise, make sure it’s from THEIR shop. It’s the only way to really support them. They worked hard to make their “brand” so you might as well dump your money into it.

       4. Sex Toys

This one’s actually for health and safety reasons. While shopping on Amazon is super convenient, the accuracy of product descriptions can be a little fuzzy. Remember friends- this is going possibly inside you or someone you care about. Make sure it’s safe and clean. Buy from the actual manufacturer.

    5. Water Filters

Now that I’ve mortified my relatives who read these articles, I’ll need a drink of water to get through all of the phone call explanations about that last bit. (Hi mom.) And because tap water can be a little gross, I use a filter pitcher. Brita, my brand of choice, gets all of the stuff OUT of the water. I really don’t know about other brands, and water can taste strange. So the brand matters here.

None of the brands mentioned in the post are our sponsors, but if Skippy wants to send me a jar, I could always use the protein. Stay safe friends, it’s a brand-filled world out there.
