5 Best Fall Activities in the Midwest

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Denison chapter.

Fall is my favorite season, and being from Illinois and going to college in Ohio, I think I know a thing or two about the Midwest. Make every bit of fall count because it goes by so fast!

1. Apple Picking

This is the most obvious activity, but also the best. Apple picking is a fall staple, and if you are like me, you grew up doing it. Some of my favorite memories are of picking apples with my family, eating apple donuts, and drinking warm apple cider. Be sure to do this one later in the season because it does not feel authentic picking apples in shorts and a tank top in 90-degree weather. Believe me, I’ve been there.

2. Late Season County Fairs

Everyone loves going to county and state fairs in the summer but you know what makes them even better? Cooler weather. No sweating, no bugs, and an abundance of fall foods. County and state fairs are a Midwest staple and nothing marks the end of summer like going to a fair in the evening and eating lots of corn and apple products.

3. Going for Hikes

While the Midwest is definitely not known for its abundance of elevated areas to hike, there are many forest preserves or outdoor areas to go and enjoy the weather. Personally my favorite season is fall because the weather is absolutely perfect. Go outside and enjoy the cool air before it actually gets cold and unbearable. And even better, you can witness the beautiful leaves changing color, all while getting in some exercise.

4. Going to Football Games

Maybe it is because I am from the North, but the best way to enjoy football is wrapped up in a blanket, with a cup of hot chocolate, yelling your heart out for your favorite team. Professional, collegiate, even high school football games are a fun night time activity in the fall. Midwestern football has a special charm, so take advantage of the season and watch your favorite team win the big game (because what else would they do?) And yes, I’m a Bears fan. Sue me.

5. Having One Last Bonfire

The best bonfires are the ones where it is actually cold outside, so everyone actually wants to stay around the fire. S’mores and hot chocolate, all around a fire with your best friends is a great way to enjoy fall. Scoop up some of those fallen leaves and branches for an extra crackle and smoky smell in your bonfire. This one is applicable to every location, but the Midwest is best for all activities.
