This Diwali, Do These Things If You Aren’t Going Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Delhi North chapter.

Diwali is undoubtedly one of the most joyous festivals in India. Every household is lit with the light of the diyas and candles and adorned with rangolis all over the place. Diwali, however, may not be as delightful of an affair for outstation students or students who live very far from home and often cannot go back home on such festivals and are left alone in their PGs and flats. To make their Diwali equally special, we bring to you some things PG students can do, this Diwali, if they are unable to go back home!

Light up your surroundings

Starting with the basics of Diwali, it is considered a collective responsibility of all to light up the nooks and corners of the country during this pious occasion. Thus, go and buy a bunch of candles and light up not just your room or PG, but also the streets and the stores nearby.

Spread the sweetness!

Make your Diwali special by making it special for others! Go around your hostel and give sweets to the needy on the streets to make them feel special. We bet their wholesome smiles of gratitude will also light up your Diwali!

Who said we can only celebrate Diwali at home?

Collect all your home-deprived friends and go on a tiny picnic or a mini outing with them. Celebrate the festival this year with a new family that you’ve found in this new place. Eat, laugh, share and make memories in a non-conventional manner this festive season.

Treat yourself

Festivals are all about good food. So the most obvious thing one can do when alone is to ask for a Diwali bonus from parents and order some good food as a treat for yourself. People who do not prefer outings can surely go for this.

FaceTime your family (obviously)

Video call your family and join them in their celebrations virtually. Talk to them about your day while they talk about theirs.

Do your own little concert

Enough of being a bathroom singer. It’s time to switch the venue to your room, as no one is there. Play the music loud and sing your heart out as you dance to the beats of the songs. This is a guaranteed way to kill the loneliness and add some life to your Diwali.

Be a little artsy

Artistic and creative minds can go ahead and decorate their rooms for themselves in their own way. Add some fairy lights to set the mood, make some rangolis and adorn your room with pretty wall hangings to add to the festive vibes.

Binge-watch with a Diwali meal

Get your favorite food, set the mood of your room, and binge-watch any latest series or movie that has just been released. This is a very simple yet perfect Diwali activity for those who absolutely love binge-watching.

If you don’t like any of the things above, go out and capture the celebrations of Diwali around you. Diwali is a lively festival that spreads a lot of colors around. So step out and click pictures of beautifully curated rangolis, the decorated fairy lights on the streets, the smiles on people’s faces, and their beautiful attires, capturing the essence of this festival of lights.

Buy yourself a set of good clothes

If going out is not your thing, stay at home in your cozy bed and shop through your favorite online stores to buy some good outfits for yourself. Let’s call it our virtual Diwali shopping!

And that is it! Sending virtual hugs to all those who are alone in this festive season. As we conclude this list of ideas, we hope these humble suggestions from us would help you through this festive season away from home. Wishing everyone reading this a happy and vibrant Diwali <3
