Why You Need Renters Insurance if You Are Living Off Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Delaware chapter.

As the end of October nears, if you are planning on getting off campus housing, you probably have already signed a lease for next year. If so, congratulations! The hardest part is over. If not, there is still time to look around for options.

Renting your own apartment is amazing. Not only is it usually cheaper than living on campus at UD, but also you get to have your own place! You start to feel like a real person, but of course there are so many things that could go wrong with your apartment – including theft, fire, etc. Luckily, our campus is safe, but it is better to be protected than not. Getting renters insurance will give you the protection you need on your rented place. Most landlords around the UD area require it, but some do not. Still, it is better to be covered in case something were to happen.

According to a ValuePenguin study, Newark has some of the most affordable renters insurance in Delaware, around $13 a month. Not too bad to ensure your property inside and outside your apartment is protected in case something were to happen. You can get your own plan or branch off your parents’ home insurance provider, share with your roommates or have your own, but just make sure to do your research so you can find the least expensive prices that work for you!
