Figuring Out the Rest of Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Delaware chapter.

Usually this time with college juniors and seniors is incredibly stressful. Taking classes for your major along with elective classes that may not even count for anything can be confusing. It takes time to actually know what you want to do with your life after you graduate college. My mom to this day still says she doesn’t even know what she wants to do.

Life after college is a thought that paces through my mind every day. It makes me a mix of happy and sad emotions. That is when I will be entering the real world and I am scared. I don’t want to live on my own or even get married in 6 or 7 years (ah). I still feel like I am 12 years old sometimes. Often I think to myself how am I 20 and in college? My junior year first semester is basically over. It feels like just yesterday I was getting on the bus to go to high school.

I am going through the process right now about thinking and applying to summer internships. Most of the internships I am applying to are dream jobs of mine that I’m wishing and hoping on stars to get. I still don’t even know how I feel about my major. Some days I love it some days I wish I could pursue my actual dream of becoming a pediatric oncologist or a veterinarian. But then I realize with those kinds of jobs, I would probably fail all the biology and chemistry classes and get woozy at the sight of blood. So I know those jobs are not meant for me.

So when I remember that I keep it out of my mind. I focus on what I truly am good at and that is my major of communications and minor in journalism. I love to communicate with people and write. I hate when people downplay communications majors and act like it’s a joke. Let me tell you something, it’s not. We are hard working people just as much as engineering majors. The classes we take are not easy A classes. They are hard and we learn how people communicate, how the media communicates, etc. and the reason we are majoring in it, is because we love it and love people.

When I realize all of this, I realize that anything can come true. No one is telling me what to major in or what kind of job I have to have. Yes I want a good salary and yes I want a successful career. But I am going to put my mind towards the things I love and accomplish my communications goals. Maybe my dream job of working in an entertainment business can come true. Or being on a news show will actually happen.

I know if you really strive towards your goals for the time you have left in college, you can make anything happen.
