Valentine’s day guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DCU chapter.

Valentine was a priest near Rome in about the year 270 A.D. He was a priest and he provided marriage, which was outlawed by the Roman Empire at that time. When he was jailed awaiting execution, the legend was born that he performed a miracle by curing the blindness of a girl called Julia. Julia, her family and servants, came to believe in Jesus Christ and were baptised by Valentine.

Father Valentine secretly performed many weddings for Roman soldiers, who were forbidden to marry. Roman Emperor Claudius II believed that married men made were bad soldiers. Before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the very first Valentine’s card himself, and gave it Julia, signing as “Your Valentine”!

Although it’s considered a commercial holiday today, where greeting card companies, florists and gift shops make their money, it still doesn’t stop some people from re-examining their relationship status. It’s not always easy to be single on a day that celebrates romantic love, but you should take advantage of being single on this day. What can you do this Valentine’s day?

A girl’s night in

Put the duvet in the living room and get cosy on the sofa with some friends. Exchange presents, eat chocolate and treat yourselves to a DIY spa treatment. Snuggle up and watch some rom-coms on Netflix. A perfect way to enjoy the night!

Shopping spree

Take the money that you would have spent on dinner and presents and put it towards a new wardrobe. Shops like Victoria’s Secret have Valentines offers. And not to mention that there will be discounts on chocolates and gifts to treat yourself with.

Take advantage of couples deals

Take your friend out and get a discounted dinner for two or half off a couple’s massage. Subway are doing a buy one get one free offer on subs this Valentines and many bars are doing two for one offers on drinks. The employees don’t have to know that you’re not really together.

Travel

Take advantage of not being committed to someone. Go exploring, take the spare time you have to go somewhere you’ve always wanted to. Go on an adventure. Do something that’s out of your comfort zone. Climb a mountain or go skydiving. Go sightseeing. Go to an art exhibit or a museum, something that you’re interested in.

Unplug and relax

Take advantage of all the “me-time” you’re getting by spoiling yourself with a massage or manicure treatment.  Or you could come home from college, put on your favourite pyjamas and order a takeout that you don’t have to share. Take the day off from social media so you don’t have to see all the Valentine’s day related posts. You’ll finally know what it feels like to be unplugged if you’re one of those people who feels addicted to it.

 Go on a date

If you have your eye on someone ask them out this Valentines. There’s no need to wait for the man to ask in this day and age. Enjoy the special offers and he might not show up empty handed!

Valentine’s Day is the day of love, but love doesn’t necessarily have to be shared between a couple. If you try and do something from this list and enjoy yourself, maybe you’ll forget that it was even a holiday to begin with.
