Top Style Trends to Watch Out For in Winter 2023

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DCU chapter.

As we start to transition into the colder months of the year, the trends for this
winter are showing up everywhere. Whether it’s on the runway or just around
campus, people are attempting to strike that ever-so-precarious balance
between looking good and staying warm.

We are undeniably seeing a huge revival of 70s-style fashion this year.
Whether it’s films such as Daisy Jones and the Six or the recent hippy trend of
the summer. The 70s are back in a big way. Fur trims, shoulder pads, and
deeper rich colours will absolutely take over our winter wardrobes this season.
One of the ways this era is influencing our winter fashion is the comeback of
office wear. Perhaps the return to work after COVID has been on our minds
because blazers, blouses and leather shoes have been a favourite of the
designers lately. The recent explosion in popularity of Vivienne Westwood will
see a shift towards a school uniform style of work wear. Plaid skirts, ties, high
socks and Mary-Janes will be very popular this winter. Nobody wants to be
reminded of the dark days of secondary school, but perhaps the decision to
keep that old plaid skirt will finally pay off.

As for those oh-so-necessary jackets, bigger and bolder silhouettes have been
dominating the runways. The classic trench coat will never go out of style, but
we are seeing designers such as Givenchy and Thom Browne opt for oversized
fits with an emphasis on wide shoulders, an unmistakable nod to the perfectly
padded looks of the 70s. If shoulders-like-a-shelf is not your style, you may
want to have a rummage through your dad’s old wardrobe because big vintage
and distressed leather jackets are all in. Leather jackets have been having their
moment for the past few years but this winter distressed brown leather and
bomber jacket styles are taking their turn in the spotlight. If your Dad doesn’t
have one, vintage and charity shops absolutely will!

Another trend we’ve been seeing all over the runway is dark wash denim.
Denim has been all the rage recently, but this season, a darker navy wash is
having its moment. Whether it’s baggy or flared, high or low rise, why not opt
for a moodier take on those classic denim pieces?
We have heard time and time again that red is absolutely the colour of the
season, but as we transition into the darker months, we’re seeing a few a darker shades than the classic cherry red we saw all through autumn. Burgundy, oxblood and maroon can be incorporated into your outfits in so
many different pieces. The red leather jacket has been trending the past few
months so why not try something new like red coloured tights, a red leather
boot or even red gemstones such as ruby or garnet?

One of the biggest trends of the year that is sure to transition into winter are
those classically feminine pieces. Bows, flower appliques and lace details have
been an absolute staple these past months and are sure to make an
appearance through winter. It’s not just putting a bow or flower in your hair,
we have seen so many creative ways to incorporate these feminine motifs in
your outfits such as tying ribbons to bags, shoes, socks and headphones. It’s an
affordable way to give character to your outfits and can be a fun DIY project
for those days when it’s a little too cold to venture outside.
