The Met Gala 2017 – A Night To Remember

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DCU chapter.

Last Monday, the most anticipated and glamourous night in New York took place – The Met Gala. This star-studded event is a night that everyone in the fashion industry looks forward to every year. Every year the Metropolitan Museum of Art designated a theme for celebrities and stylists to follow, though very few celebrities follow the theme. The theme of this year was in homage to Rei Kawakubo, the high fashion and avant-garde design of Comme de Garcons. This was the first time in over thirty years that a living designer has been honoured at this prestigious event since Yves Saint Laurent.

There is no surprise that the red carpet was full of A-list celebrities from the film, music, and fashion industry. Naomi Campbell graced the carpets with long-time and newly announced British Vogue Editor Edward Enninful. Kylie Jenner attended the Gala with the fashion icon that is Donatella Versace, wearing a sheer god Versace gown. There was an emergence of new couples making their public debut such as Selena Gomez and The Weeknd, and Jennifer Lopez with Alex Rodriguez.

However, the best aspect of the night was of course the fashion. There’s no surprise that some people wowed the carpet while others not so much. I’m going to take you through some of the best dressed people at the Met Gala.

  1. Rihanna

Now I know they many of you may be adjusting your eyes to this dress, but I thought this dress was outrageously beautiful. Rei Kawakubo designed this dress and it was the perfect dress to showcase this designer’s sheer talent and skill. It certainly stood out amongst the other gowns, making it one of the best outfits of the night.

  1.  Lily Rose Depp

Pretty in pink certainly applies to this beauty! Lily Rose Depp is wearing Chanel at her first Met Ball Gala. Simple, classic, and utterly beautiful, which is no surprise from any gown from Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld.

  1. Zendaya

It is no surprise that Zendaya completely slayed the red carpet. This dress is nothing short of perfection. The Disney star is wearing Dolce and Gabbana and looking like an absolute queen!

  1. Nick Jonas

Now it’s not very often that we talk about the men of the Gala, but Nick Jonas dressed better than some of the woman at the event. He is wearing a Ralph Lauren suit and the styling of this suit is in impeccable.

  1. Emily Ratajkowski

A vision in blue! Emily Ratajkowski is sporting a Marc Jacobs gown. The sequins and sparkle embody the actress as an elegant mermaid.

  1. Zoe Krovitz

Zoe Krovitz wowed us all with this stunning Oscar de la Rental gown. The black ruffle detail on the dress adds a luxurious feel to the dress and makes it the perfect gown for the occasion.

  1. Donald Glover

Another man who rocked the red carpet was none other than Donald Glover. The actor wore a stylish patterned suit b Burberry and was without a doubt one of the most stylish people on the carpet.

  1. Dakota Johnson

The Fifty Shades Darker star rocked the Gala in this stunning blacked ruffled gown. The exaggerated shoulders on this Gucci gown only make it more dramatic and extraordinary for an event as such.

  1. Cara Delevingne

It is no surprise that supermodel Cara Delevingne was one of the best dressed on the night. She wore a floral-patterned Chanel suit with matching silver pumps. She is never one to try and blend in, and she certainly did with her silver painted forehead. No one ever makes this outfit look as effortless as this supermodel!

  1. Kim Kardashian

The final A-lister is none other than Kim Kardashian herself. The Queen of social media never ceases to amaze us with what she wears and this is no different. Wearing a Vivienne Westwood gown, Kim is dressed in pure elegance.

There were many other outfits on the night that definitely deserve an honourable mention. Supermodels Ashley Graham and Jourdan Dunn, as well as Nicki Minaj were wearing H&M custom gowns. Joan Smalls and Candice Swanepoel also went for a high-street designer by wearing Topshop couture, proving that designer isn’t always everything. Kendall Jenner was another model who’s outfit certainly turned a few heads in a sheer La Perla gown. Blake Lively as usual stunned the crowd with her golden Versace gown. Nevertheless, it is safe to say that the Met Bal certainly didn’t disappoint the our fashion expectations and who knows what it will be like next year!
