Our hair is one of the first things people see about us, and I know we all hate having a bad hair day. Fear no more! Here are the steps you should take to ensure your hair is always the best it can be.

Pre-Shampoo

I know, this is a thing now! Using a pre-shampoo will smooth your hair before you get it wet, reducing damage while you are massaging shampoo into your hair.

Go for a treatment that will suit your hair care needs, whether you have oily or dry hair, thin or frizzy there is something for you.

Wash your hair regularly, but not every day.

Washing your hair every day is over washing, and this can strip away the natural oils and proteins that are present in your hair, which are needed to maintain healthy hair and scalp. This can be quite damaging for your hair – especially if your hair is bleached, coloured, has been chemically treated or is very naturally dry.

On top of this, make sure you’re using the correct type of shampoo for your hair; there are many options available for every type.

If you do wash your hair every day, try to cut back to 3 times a week – this will also reduce how fast your hair gets greasy.

If you use conditioner, make sure to only use it on the ends of your hair – if you put it on your scalp your hair will get greasier faster. With a conditioner, it is imperative to use heat protection spray.

Always use protection! (Typically a good rule of thumb)

Your hair can be damaged by both UV and Heated tools, including your hairdryer, hair straighteners and curling tongs, so it is always important to ensure your hair is well protected.

Mark Woolley of Electric Hairdressing told Stylist: “when you dry your hair at home, always use a heat protector”.

Ensure the hair dryer is not too close to your hair as this can cause split ends!

To ensure the style lasts, put your head upside down and blow dry your hair, moving your hair around while you do – then flick your head up when your hair is mostly dry and dry the rest. This will give you volume and limits the number of products you are using to achieve the same style. Try to also maintain this one style for a few days (ideally until your next wash), as this will prevent damage.

Remember, air drying your hair is also an option, and is healthier for your hair. (Plus, if you put your hair in braids when it’s wet and leave them in overnight without drying, you get the most gorgeous curls!)

Invest in good quality products (if you can)

Just like your skin, your hair deserves the best quality products for the best results. Investing in good quality products and tools will keep your hair looking healthy, strong, and fresh.

Good brushes are worth investing in and can even last your whole life if they are looked after properly. Keep your brushes clean and free of dead hair and oil, by washing them in a mixture of baking soda and water once a month.

Instead of using typical hair ties with elastics to tie up your hair, use a scrunchie or an “invisibobble” instead, this reduces the crease that you’ll see after you take your hair down, and also prevents breakages in the hair.

Go easy when brushing your hair!

Being gentle while brushing your hair is imperative for keeping your hair healthy. For silky, shiny, and healthy hair you should aim to brush twice a day for a minute each time.

Silk Pillowcases

Sleeping on silk pillowcases can reduce breakage in your hair, as cotton pillowcases can cause friction with hair. Not only can this break your hair, but it can also promote frizz.

A lot of us make sure we have the perfect skincare routine to suit all of our skin’s needs, so why not treat your hair to the same level of care? Before you know it you’ll have glowing skin and shining hair!
