Current Fashion Trends and How to Wear Them

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DCU chapter.

2020 saw us sitting at home A LOT! Still, that didn’t stop new trends coming into fruition.  Bored in quarantine, many of us did an obscured amount of online shopping, copping the newest and hottest items. From wintery sweater vests to Bridgerton inspired corsets, here is some inspiration on how you can look your absolute best in 2021!

Faux leather has become quite a staple in the last year. Everyone has owned a leather jacket at some point, whether it be a tight biker style or oversized fit. Leather pants are now rising in popularity, most notably in classic black or brown. Urban Outfitters has a wide variety that has been flying off the website! To dress down this funky material, pair the pants or jacket with a fuzzy jumper for some fun contrast. To make the outfit more grudge, wear a bralette and some chunky jewellery to fit in with the e-girls on Tiktok.

Who remembers the 2014 American Apparel tennis skirts? How about the only thing Ariana Grande wore in 2018 – an oversized crewneck? Combine the two, add a collared shirt and you have the Internets trendiest outfit on. Slightly resembling a school uniform, this has become the Instagram uniform. Mix and match patterns or keep the pieces neutral, this outfit is super flexible in any way you want to wear it. Doc Martens, whether it be the classic boots or loafers, elevate the outfit if you don’t want to look too girly.

One of Emma Chamberlain’s favourite current trends is sweater vest. Often wearing one in her Youtube videos, this piece of clothing can be styled in many ways. Sweater vests are perfect for layering. A simple long sleeve top to a thicker turtle neck will make sure you stay warm during the colder days. The outfit can be completed with some knee-high boots and a big fluffy jacket. When the days will start getting warmer, sweater vests can even be worn on their own, so don’t get rid of them so fast when Spring comes around!

The 1800s romantic drama, Bridgerton, has made us all want teleport back in time. Well there is no need as a staple item from that era is coming back. Corsets have been very popularised on social media. The vintage piece has taken on a life of its own in the 21 century and styling it is much easier than you! Surprisingly, pairing corsets with denim has been a go-to for more people. Of course, you can live out your fairytale dreams by pairing it with a skirt. But, if you feel like rocking it to your local Tesco, a pair of baggy jeans does the trick.

As we start a fresh year with fresh trends, it can be fun to experiment with what we have in our wardrobes. Get creative and have fun with your new found style!
