The friends you make in college are completely different from any other breed of friends you will make in your entire life.

Unlike your secondary school friends, you actually chose these bonds based on common interests, not simply because you grew up with them.

In secondary school, you often get stuck with your group of friends because of proximity, not because you want to be. This is a huge reason why some people can’t wait to run off to college — and rightfully so.

Finally, you have the freedom to choose the people you want to spend the majority of your time with.

So, what makes your college friends the best you’ll ever have?

  1. They were there for all your big girl/boy firsts:

Maybe the first time you had sex? The first time you had to run to Boots for the morning after pill? Or maybe that first major breakdown you had about your dead-end degree? Chances are, your college friends were there for those firsts. And will be there for many more…like maybe your first slightly illegal thing?

2. They always feature in your most epic stories:

If it’s not climbing the wall/fence into on-campus accommodation together, after hours. Or when you held that huge after session, one night after Coppers. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you’re a little wine drunk and surrounded by people who are high on life and college.

3. There is nothing sweeter than a Freshers #TBT :

Even though you may want to kill your friend for posting that horrendous selfie from the Freshers Ball, you will still share it on Facebook or Instagram. Ah, the memories.

4. They are the only ones who have seen you on a 4am chocolate binge, and they are the only people that ever will.

True friendship is solidified on (completely sober) nights when you stay in and binge weird foods together. Your college friends have seen a weird side of you that would probably horrify a lot of others.

5. They helped you through the homesickness.

They were there when you mourned the loss of some of your closest secondary school friends. And when you went home for a few days and really struggled to come back. But they always helped you through.

6. They were there when you realized that you are an adult now, and the real world is coming.

They just panicked along with you.

7. You nursed each other back to health, many times.

Whether it be a simple hangover or a serious sinus infection, they’ve seen it all and helped you every step of the way.

8. You may or may not have done some semi-illegal things together.

YOLO

9. You’re extra grateful to see them when you do because they live so far away.

Summertime can be hard, but when you do see them, it’s like you guys were never separated. And you get some fun road-trips to some magical places you’ve never been…like Mayo.

10. You’ll always be your weird college-selves when you’re together, no matter what age.

You will always have your inside jokes together. And still, have probably seen them in worse states then their significant other has. And you know what, they most likely will be your bridesmaid someday.
