On the 21st January 2022, following advice from NPHET, the government announced a plan to lift most public health measures. This move comes after nearly two years of lockdowns and strict social distancing, put in place to prevent the spread of Covid 19. The government has attributed credit to the Irish people for making this advancement possible by cooperating with restrictions and with the enthusiastic uptake of vaccines. But what exactly does this mean for us?

Mask Wearing

Although the government’s new plan includes many changes, one thing that remains in place is mask-wearing. Masks must be worn on public transport and retail premises. Public offices, schools, colleges and settings offering specified services such as hairdressers also require a mask. Employees in customer-facing and food preparation roles must wear a mask along with healthcare workers.

Social Distancing

Formal requirements for social distancing have been lifted. It is no longer necessary to remain two metres apart in public spaces such as shops and restaurants that have removed the one metre between tables rule.

Digital COVID Certificate

The EU Digital Covid Certificate, issued upon vaccination or recovery from Covid 19, is no longer needed to gain access to domestic settings or activities. However, the certificate remains necessary for international travel.

Household Visits

During the height of the pandemic household visits were discouraged by public health guidelines. Under the government’s latest plan all restrictions on these types of gatherings are lifted.

Hospitality

Bars, restaurants and cafes have been subject to strict requirements since the beginning of the pandemic. With no social distancing or proof of vaccination needed to gain access, these venues can operate normally. Moreover, they are no longer required to obtain phone numbers or emails of customers, previously used for contact tracing.

Nightclubs & Events

Recently, nightclubs have reopened after a long hiatus. The entertainment sector was one of the hardest hit by the pandemic with many venues shutting down. However, with restrictions easing nightclubs are allowed to operate as they did pre-pandemic with no restrictions on opening hours or capacity. Indoor and outdoor events, including weddings and sporting events, are also allowed to take place without restrictions.

The last two years have not been easy for anyone. However, I believe the pandemic has given us a greater appreciation of the simple pleasures in life, whether that’s spending time with family or going to a coffee shop with friends. With restrictions easing, hopefully, we are reaching the end of this difficult time and can begin to live a more normal life.
