Kickball and Tennis and Tights- Oh My!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Davidson chapter.

Despite the miserable weather this spring, various service events and fundraisers have been sprouting up over the past few weekends. If you weren’t able to make it to all of them, here’s a quick snapshot of what you missed!

Festival On The Green to Benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Saturday, April 5

Sponsored By Turner House

Turner House proudly welcomed a crowd of families to the first Annual Festival on the Green. Local vendors (Toast, TCBY, and Carburritos) brought a wealth of tasty lunch options, and Davidson’s Nuances, Androgyny, and Delilahs performed, to the enjoyment of the listening crowd. With carnival games (conk a crow, anyone?), potato sack races, face painting, craft tables, bubbles, and cornhole, the Festival on the Green will hopefully become a lasting tradition in the Davidson Community.

Frankelfest Kickball Tournament

Saturday, April 5

Sponsored by Kappa Sigma Fraternity

Kappa Sigma rallied over 200 students to participate in the 4th Annual Frankelfest Kickball Tournament in honor of John Frankel, past president of Kappa Sigma, who tragically passed away in a car accident in 2011. At the end of the day, Kappa Sigma raised over $3000 for the John Frankel Scholarship. With more students participating in the Frankelfest tournament every year, Kappa Sigma is “kickin’ grass” in support of a wonderful cause!

Alpha Week 2014: Olympus’ Challenge

Monday, April 7 – Friday, April 11

Sponsored by Tau Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated

The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. organized a week of service and educational talks centered on the theme of Greek Mythology. The Alphas and many other students worked with the Physical Plant to plant new grass on campus (Demeter’s Healing), engaged with faculty in an interdisciplinary discussion (Dionysus’ Banquet), and led a workshop on job interviewing complete with business cards and headshots (Hermes’ Sandals).

Jay Chitty Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament

Friday, April 11

Sponsored by Kappa Alpha Fraternity and Connor Eating House

Honoring the memory of Jay Chitty, a Davidson student who tragically passed away in a plane crash, this tennis tournament raised almost $1800 for the Jay Chitty Memorial Scholarship. 126 competitors “served up” a great bracket while many others (read: 200 in total) cheered wildly in the stands. Tournament champions Frances Adams and Chester Lindley were a fearsome pair, but every team gave it their all. Quotes Connor Evins, Service Chair of KA Fraternity, “We are hoping that [this tournament] will continue to grow as the next generation takes over!”

Ball for Balls: 3v3 Basketball Tournament Benefitting Testicular Cancer Research

Saturday, April 12

Sponsored by Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity

A slam dunk of an event (if you will) SAE’s Ball for Balls Basketball tournament raised over $1500 for testicular cancer research. 22 teams (over 200 students) left it all on the court, and everyone celebrated at SAE’s block party just after the final shot dropped. A special shout out to Will Thoni for sporting a wildly fashion-forward “tights-only” costume, and to the basketball and golf teams, whose dunk-crazy matchup was the most entertaining of the day. Chris Czerapowicz, Tom Droney, Ali Mackay, and Will Thoni went undefeated as a team, completely blowing away the competition; they do what they like and they do it well.

Phi Gam Slam Benefitting the United Service Organization (USO)

Saturday, April 12

Sponsored by Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity

Fiji’s 2nd Annual Volleyball tournament was a raging success this year, raising over $3000 for USO programs benefitting US soldiers and their families. Fiji partnered with both corporate and local sponsors, reaching out to Wells Fargo, Summit Coffee, and Char Grill, among others. 16 teams (over 100 attendees) competed for Phi Gam Slam bragging rights. Dan Hagemann, Chester Lindley, Sam Densen, Marston Morte, and Collin Malone walked away victorious, but everyone wins when you’re raising money for our troops–can you dig it?
