ICYMI: Ladies of the Oscars Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Davidson chapter.

Love it or hate it, the Oscars are the not only the pinnacle of film awards, but also the pinnacle of fashion. While the award ceremony is early in the year, every red carpet for the rest of the year will be compared to Sunday night’s event. While the public ratings were down, and maybe everyone was a little disappointed with the winners (Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel crushed it), the fashion did not disappoint.

In case you want to get a jump on your dress shopping for formal, here’s what was hot on Sunday night:

Red: It’s a color for the bold, but it can realistically be pulled off by anyone.

Worn by: Rosamund Pike, Dakota Johnson, Behati Prinsloo (Adam Levine’s wife), Sophie Hunter (Benedict Cumberbatch’s wife)

Metallics: Want to shine bright like the diamond that you are? Everyone did at the Oscars!

Worn by: Laura Dern, Emma Stone, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Rita Ora, Faith Hill, Chloe Grace Moretz

Textured: Do you ever get nervous and play with your dress? Textured dresses are in, so you’ll have plenty to pay attention to other than your awkward date.

Worn by: Marion Cotillard, Sienna Miller, Lupita Nyong’o, Kerry Washington, Naomi Watts, Lady Gaga (looking surprisingly normal), Keira Knightly, Julianne Moore (Best Actress)

Classic Black and White: Don’t like color? Too lazy to try on something that you don’t know will automatically look good? This is the year for you!

Worn by: Patricia Arquette (bold dress for a bold woman), Cate Blanchett, Zoe Saldana, Margot Robbie, Tegan and Sara (with a punk twist), Jenna Dewan Tatum, Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep.

Other trends: light pink/champagne, pastel blue, neutrals

Worn by: Zoe Saldana, Octavia Spencer, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Kendrick, Viola Davis

Not into trends? Neither are these stars! Shout out to Scarlett Johansson, Paige Butcher, and Willow Bay for standing out…even if that means wearing a Yoda-printed dress.
