8 Sites to Shop for Semiformal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Davidson chapter.

When the temperature starts dropping and riding boots replace gladiator sandals, you know it’s semiformal season.  Don’t panic.  So what if you just spent the last of your summer savings on a new pair of bean boots?  That doesn’t mean you have to wear the same dress as last year (but if you really did just spend your last dollar, borrow a statement necklace from a friend, try a new hairstyle, and no one will notice!).

Take a look at these sites for semiformal appropriate dresses under $75.

1.  Asos

This is always my first stop on the dress hunt.  With free shipping and free returns, shopping here always feels like Christmas.  Can’t decide if you should get that dress in red or white?  A size 4 or size 6?  Try them all, and return what doesn’t work.  Many styles also come in tall, petite, and curve.

ASOS PETITE Debutante Mini Dress with V Neck In Scuba, $66.33

ASOS Delicate Lace Panel Skater Dress, $72.01

2.  Ruche

Although Ruche offers free shipping on orders over $75, you probably won’t have to spend that much to get a cute dress.  Think of this site as a younger, cheaper Anthropologie.

Full Of Light Metallic Dress, $38.99

Teahouse Embroidered Dress, $58.99

3.  Lulu’s

Lulu’s has a wide selection of modern dresses perfect for girls in their twenties.  You’re sure to look sexy, no matter which dress you choose (plus, free shipping on orders over $50!).

LULUS Exclusive Shoot to Score Burgundy Dress, $44.00

By Candlelight Wine Red Lace Dress, $42.00

4.  Boohoo

This international shopping site has plenty of options, and a $45 minimum for free shipping.  Want to visualize how your dress will move as you make your big entrance to the party?  Each description includes a short video of the dress on the runway.

Maureen Ruched Detail Chiffon Skater Dress, $26.00

Lucy Jewelled Collar Woven Skater Dress, $44.00

5.  ModCloth

A go-to site for many collegiettes, ModCloth doesn’t have as wide of a dress selection for less than $75, but what they do have is killer.  Need I include that all orders over $50 include free shipping?

And All That Snazz Dress, $69.99

Slow Dance Jams Dress, $69.99

6.  AMI Clubwear

Most of the dresses on this site are super sexy, but with the right hair, makeup, and accessories, many of these pieces could work for semiformal.  All dresses are under $60, and with free shipping on orders of $50+, you’re bound to find something worth buying.

Red Cutout Mesh Sleeveless Style Sexy Party Dress, $34.99

Black Beige Two Tone Sexy Bodycon Dress, $27.99

7. Love Culture

This site was started to provide women with affordable, empowering dresses.  Exactly what every collegiette wants, right?

Striped Pleated Skater Dress, $29.95

Mod Outlined Cut Out Dress, $24.95

8. Nasty Gal

As the brand name implies, this is the place to shop for a dress with attitude.  Take the description of the Á la Mod Dress to heart: “It’s not just for the party; it is the party.”  With decent prices and sassy styles, you might just have to get two dresses (there’s always Red & Black Ball, right?) to reach that $75 free shipping minimum.

Nasty Gal Á la Mod Dress, $54.60

Nasty Gal Sharp Cuts Dress, $68.00

Now that you have some sites to prowl for semiformal dresses, your only problems will be choosing just one dress and getting back to your homework.  Good luck!

With my pale skin and curly hair, it might look like I spend all of my days in the library--which I totally could because I LOVE to read--but I promise I don't. I am an avid subscriber to Vogue, Lucky, and InStyle (you can infer my passion for shopping from that, right?). When I can't find what I want on the racks, I'll sew it myself. Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly are my style icons, not to mention stars in some of my favorite classic movies.
