6 Reasons You Should Watch “The Crown”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Davidson chapter.

1. Elizabeth II is a power (dare I say *nasty*) woman.

Much of the drama in the show stems from the tension in Elizabeth’s marriage. Phillip doesn’t like having a wife more powerful than he is, but Elizabeth won’t let that stop her. So many times throughout the season she roasted Phillip for his incessant whining. One of my favorites:

Phillip: “Are you my wife or my queen?”

Elizabeth: “I’m both!”

Phillip: “I want to be married to my wife.”

Elizabeth: “I am both and a strong man would be able to kneel to both.”

2. The costumes.

It’s the forties and fifties, so you know the fashions will be fantastic. I particularly loved Princess Margaret’s looks. She rocked riding pants and colorful floral pajamas.

3. The jewels.

The series is called The Crown, after all. The crowns are stunning, but so are the necklaces, earrings, and watches.

4. The history.

I learned so much! Did you know that a smog descended on London for five days in 1952 and killed maybe up to 12,000 people? People stopped driving because they couldn’t see a few feet in front of them. I’m always a sucker for period drama, partly because I get to educate myself while having fun.

5. The show cost a lot to make.

$100 million, to be more exact. Between a lifesize replica of Buckingham Palace and 7,000 costumes, that figure might not be so surprising. As Netflix’s most ambitious series to date, you kind of owe it to them to check this out.

6. It will keep you busy for seasons to come!

The goal is to take the series up to the present day over six seasons. That means we’ll get to see Will, Kate, and Harry!

With my pale skin and curly hair, it might look like I spend all of my days in the library--which I totally could because I LOVE to read--but I promise I don't. I am an avid subscriber to Vogue, Lucky, and InStyle (you can infer my passion for shopping from that, right?). When I can't find what I want on the racks, I'll sew it myself. Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly are my style icons, not to mention stars in some of my favorite classic movies.
