5 Time Management Tips to Keep You on Track This Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Davidson chapter.

It’s September, already three weeks into the semester. I know what some of you are thinking: “NBD, I got this whole college thing,” and that’s wonderful, keep it up! Meanwhile, the rest of us are still floundering around, trying to find that golden balance between work and relaxation. I’m in my second year here at Davidson and still working on managing my time more effectively! I have, however, picked up a few tips and tricks along the way that might just make your life easier. You’re welcome.

1. Invest in a planner and update it regularly.

How are you going to keep track of all your assignments, clubs, sports, and who knows what else unless you write it down? It sounds painfully obvious, but keeping a well-organized planner can make a world of difference. Also, who doesn’t love the feeling of crossing off something on a to-do list?

Pro Tip: Color-code your planner to make finding things easier!

2. Focus on one task at a time.

For multitaskers like me, this one is especially hard, but it’s oh so important to keep your energies dedicated to only one thing at a time. Not only will you be able to get stuff completely done instead of having a bunch of half-done assignments, but you’ll also be able to create a better, well thought out end product. If you’re having trouble honing in your attention on one thing, try listening to music or do something calming for a moment.

3. Set time limits (or goals) for yourself.

Let’s say you have around two hours of homework to do. Find a comfy spot, set your timer, and make yourself get it all done in one sitting. Or, alternatively, you can set your timer and see how much you can get done within that amount. More pressure or lower pressure depending on your personality. Either way, it works.

4. Take short breaks in between work.

It may sound counter-intuitive, but if you’re really feeling the struggle to find motivation, give yourself little 5-10 minute breaks when you reach a milestone on an assignment. This in particular really keeps me going during a marathon homework sesh. Keep in mind, though, when you take your breaks, do something that keeps you energetic and alert, like watching a funny video or taking a short walk around campus.

5. Don’t stress!

The most important tip of all. Don’t let your worries get the best of you. Keep a clear head, chug through, and everything will get done, I promise.
