In today’s world, things change faster than you can refresh your Instagram feed. Because we have so much information at our fingertips, it can be hard to sift through quality reporting versus fake news. As women who want to make an impact on the world, staying informed is critical. With the internet, it’s easier than ever to get info without having to sit down and watch T.V. like our parents or grandparents had to. Personally, I try to block out 30 minutes over the course of the day to catch up with the current events.

The great news (ha!) is there are tons of opportunities for college students to take advantage of free digital subscriptions. One of the best is from the New York Times, which is offering Dartmouth students free digital access to its stories! The New York Times is one of the most reliable and respected new sources, so it’s definitely worth it to check out this opportunity.

With our world more interconnected than ever, you don’t want to be that person who limits their perspective by not taking at least a few minutes to properly get up to speed. Sure, you can get some tidbits from social media, but nothing can replace journalism with high standards. You might be surprised at all the stories that are incredibly important, but get buried in the news cycle. Also, you never know when your news savvy will come in handy — maybe you’ll impress your professors (or your crush!) with your well-informed-ness.
