A Guide to Natural Skincare: Skincare Done Thoughtfully

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Dalhousie chapter.

Let’s be real. Who has time to worry about how our beauty products are made? We’re quick to apply product to our skin without giving thought to what’s really in the bottle. We choose our mascara based on how pretty the tube is or how much volume it promises to give our lashes, not what ingredients are listed on the back.

The beauty about using all natural products is that not only are you helping the environment, you’re also giving your skin the care it deserves. Your body is your home, so you should treat it well! I used to buy my makeup and other facial products based on what was popular at the time, but being more mindful about the products I apply to my face has made all the difference.

Cleanser

I want to start with face wash and acne-reducing products because this topic hits close to home. Acne and sensitive skin have always been a struggle of mine. When I tell you I’ve tried about 100 skin care routines in my lifetime, I mean 100. Finally, I’ve found the best products for my skin and it has never looked better.

I have fallen in love with the brand Origins. They are 100% vegetarian, cruelty-free and mostly use plant-based ingredients. Their focus is to “give back to nature” while improving your skin. I use the Checks and Balances™ Frothy Face Wash, as well as the Ginzing™ Refreshing Scrub Cleanser. Both products are great for rejuvenating and exfoliating your skin. I like to alternate, using one in the morning and one at night.

Moisturizer

Another amazing skin care brand is Fresh. After I’ve washed my face, I use their Vitamin Nectar Glow Moisturizer. I have personally never encountered a moisturizer as deliciously scented as this one. It doesn’t feel heavy on my skin and it’s helped immensely with my acne. This product is on the pricey side, but a little goes a long way so you certainly get what you pay for!

Mascara

Mascara is the one makeup product that I could not live without. I never leave the house with naked eyelashes! I have experimented with many different brands and types of mascara, but Ilia Beauty has my heart. They are organic, 100% vegan and quite affordable. Their Limitless Lash Mascara has become a favorite of mine and it has everything you could possibly wish for in a mascara – bringing your lashes to life and making your eyes pop!

Foundation

Finding the perfect foundation that will give you enough coverage without irritating your skin is tough. I recently discovered Tarte’s all-natural Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation and I am hooked. It lasts for well over 12 hours once applied and is very lightweight. I would recommend this foundation for oily skin types because it has a matte finish, but anyone could give it a try. What’s more? It’s also waterproof!

Lip Gloss

The brand 100% Pure has created a Fruit Pigmented® Lip Gloss that will literally have you licking your lips. They are gluten-free, cruelty-free and vegan—their name says it all! The lip gloss ingredients include cocoa, pomegranate and best of all, red wine. It looks just as luxurious as it feels on your lips.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the key to keeping your skin healthy. The sun can be incredibly damaging over time and sunscreen shouldn’t just be used in the summertime. I used to avoid wearing sunscreen on my face because it would increase my acne significantly but being prone to sunburns, I needed to find an all-natural solution. Supergoop is top-rated at Sephora and I love that it doesn’t leave my face feeling greasy. Their Unseen Sunscreen has an SPF of 40 and is also very affordable. Interestingly enough, some foundations already have sunscreen in their formula but even on those no-makeup days, you should still be protecting yourself from the sun.
