Pregnancy is known to be the most beautiful and fulfilling event in any woman’s life. I see countless photos while scrolling through social media of celebrities smiling for what seems like the entire nine months. What I do not see is the reality of pregnancy which is the back pain, leg swelling, and feeling like a Pillsbury biscuit container ready to pop. Clothes become uncomfortable, bras never fit right, and underwear is a lost cause.

On September 16th, Kim Kardashian West’s company SKIMS changed the game forever. SKIMS released a new maternity line with various pieces like the Maternity Nursing Bra and the Maternity Mid Thigh Bodysuit

There was a lot of controversy revolving around this launch. People on social media felt that there should not be a reason to cover up a pregnant body. Part of the controversy was based on some people’s views on shapewear alone. The view on shapewear can be a hot topic when speaking about body positivity. This line in particular is geared more towards the mother’s comfort than the way her body looks. This launch was designed by mothers for expecting mothers to feel comfortable during and after pregnancy.

The Mid Thigh Bodysuit was designed with a thin elastic that can hold the abdomen and take off some of the back pressure. The compression leggings were designed to release the tension of swelling. This bodysuit is great for mothers, especially after a cesarian birth. The brand added a slit in the fabric that allows for easy use in the restroom and less tension on the body when trying to remove clothing.

The idea for this maternity line is very different from the other SKIMS products we are all used to seeing. The vision for this line was not to “snatch” or tweak your body structure but to provide comfort. Pregnancy can take a physical toll on women’s bodies and SKIMS goal was to provide quality undergarments that care for you just like you care for your baby.
