Meeting Bae’s Parents

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CWU chapter.

You finally decided to DTR with the person you have been talking to for months, and soon you realize that it’s finally time to meet their parents!  You might be freaking out or you could be totally ready and excited, either way here are a few tips to ace meeting the fam and maybe earn a few extra brownie points!

Housewarming Gift

Try not to show up empty-handed, even if your SO tells you their parents are not expecting you to bring anything (it is part of etiquette 101, really). It shows a bit of effort on your part and shows that you care about them and them opening up their home.  Even if you are just going for dinner bring a bottle of wine or some nice flowers.

Make Sure to Look Presentable

First impressions are everything, so try not to roll into the family event in your leggings and his sweatshirt (this isn’t your 9 am).  Mix it up with a cute dress or a nice top, just remember to try and keep it fairly modest and play it safe if you are unsure of your style.

Don’t Forget About the Rest of the Family

Talking to the parents is very important, but don’t ignore his siblings or other family members that may be there.  Make sure to ask his little sister about school and activities she is in, or talk sports with his brothers. The whole family wants to get to know you, especially if you are going to stick around for awhile.

Offer To Help Out

This also might seem like a no-brainer, but it can really make a world of difference. Ask if you can help with the dishes or cleaning up.  This shows that you respect the effort their mom and family is putting in to host you and that you are willing to be a part of the family dynamic and not just spend time with your SO as soon as the festivities are over.

Don’t forget to mind your  P’s and Q’s, a simple please and thank you can go a long way.  You are on their turf, so don’t forget to complement their home, meal, and anything else they have done for your visit.  Among all of this don’t forget to have fun and BE YOURSELF! They want to know you for you and why their kid is all about you! Be confident and go for it!
