As an avid crocheter I am here to give you all the advice on how to start!

Crochet is such beautiful art! You can create so many things that you can feel proud and accomplished about!

  • Find a project that is beginner-friendly!
    • There are so many great free patterns on the web! I would recommend anything that has a granny square! My favorite, free and easy granny square patterns come from Heather Brookes’ blog called “Hayhay Crochet”, on her blog she gives great detail with written instructions on projects, and she even includes how to make different sizes of clothing items! What I love best is she also makes Youtube videos on all her projects that are incredibly easy to follow! Other inspiration can also be found on TikTok! I also recommend just doing practice stitches by making a square of all different types of stitches.
  • Gather the materials
    • Each project will usually recommend a type of yarn and a certain-sized hook! Most beginner-friendly projects will use acrylic yarn as it is easy to work with! I would recommend going to a craft store or even ordering a basic crochet kit on amazon, they typically include a good number of different-sized crochet hooks and other tools that can come in handy. I also recommend always getting yarn at a craft store because feeling it is incredibly important before you buy! As you progress through your crochet journeys you can learn what are your favorites and begin ordering online. Some other material I suggest is a yarn bowl, a basket to store everything and some good, sharp crafting scissors to cut the yarn.
  • Get started!
    • It may be stressful at first, but it will get easier after practice. Stitches won’t look perfect, but that is what is amazing with crochet, you can just unravel it and try again. Take your time. This is no speed race. Remember to follow the steps, or watch some videos to help you along the way. I’ve been doing this since I was a young kid and I still look up YouTube videos to remind me how to do a certain stitch.
  • Have fun!

Hi y'all! I am a 4th year at Central Washington University! I am double majoring in psychology and biology with a specialization in biomedicine. I love crocheting! From sweaters to blankets to socks! I think it's so cool how we can create things out of just a bundle of yarn! I also love rabbits! My rabbit's name is Flynn and he loves bananas. Taylor Swift is my go-to girl for any kind of feeling!
