Get to Know: #GIRLBOSS Elyse

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CWU chapter.

Sophia Amoruso, best-selling author and founder/executive chairman of worldwide retailer Nasty Gal defines being a #GIRLBOSS as “…someone who’s in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it. As a #GIRLBOSS, you take control and accept responsibility. You’re a fighter – you know when to throw punches and when to roll with them. Sometimes you break the rules, sometimes you follow them, but always on your own terms. You know where you’re going, but can’t do it without having some fun along the way. You value honesty over perfection. You ask questions. You take your life too seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re going to take over the world, and change it in the process. You’re a badass.” The term #GIRLBOSS perfectly describes Elyse Sparks, a CWU Alum  and the current Department Manager at one of the largest Nordrstrom stores in the region. Her Campus was able to catch up with Elyse to discuss everything from her time as a Wildcat to her career now at Nordstrom.

Favorite holiday tradition that your family has?

Wearing matching onesie PJ’s all day on Christmas with my mom and my sister.

Holiday treat of choice?

I’m going to go totally basic here and say anything pumpkin. ☺

Favorite thing about CWU/Ellensburg when you were a student?

The sense of community and family. While at Central you really felt like part of the community and all of my friends I made while attending school have turned into life long ones. It was as school where everyone knew everyone and no matter where you went you felt welcomed.

Favorite place in the world, and why?

Cancun, Mexico. When I’m working, I’m on the go all the time so when I’m on vacation I love to do absolutely nothing but lay on the beach in the sun for hours on end.

What is your favorite piece in your closet and why?

Currently it is my grey Splendid Duster Cardi (Item #5250517). I love to wear it with a basic black dress, or leather leggings, or distressed denim. It is so versatile and basic that I can dress it up for an event or I can wear it with my Nikes and do errands on my day off.

Best part about your job?

The people – from customers to employees. I LOVE inspiring my team everyday and being that person that pushes them beyond their comfort zone to achieve their goals. I also find joy in helping my customers find that outfit that makes them feel like a rock star and boosts their self confidence. Another thing I love about my job is that I am consistently challenged because everyday is different and in a fast pace environment it keeps you on your toes.

As a past employee of Elyse’s, I got to see see first hand how hard work and drive can lead to success. No matter the size of a challenge, this Wildcat #GIRLBOSS is showing others that all you need is a little drive to be successful.
