Cinco de Mayo: More than Just Margs!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CWU chapter.

Cinco de Mayo, a popular day full of beer, tequila and tacos, has a negative reputation around the United States. We think of it as a day when it is socially acceptable to get trashed on a week day. But do we, as Americans, actually know the relevence of the 5th of May? (p.s. it’s not Mexican Independence Day)

Cinco de Mayo represents the Battle of Puebla, which took place on, you guessed it, May 5th, in the year 1862. The Mexican troops defeated the French, which subsequently inforced the resistance to French forces during the reign of Napoleon, aka 19th century’s biggest a-hole.

For the most part, Mexican-American areas of the United States use this day to celebrate their heritage, but others just use it as an excuse to down as many margaritas and tacos as possible! Believe it or not, Cinco de Mayo doesn’t receive special treatment in the majority of Mexico. Banks and schools remain open, people still go to work, and besides the state of Puebla, this day is like any other.

How can we celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Ellensburg? Pull out your embroidered, patterned skirt from your closet and wear it to the Blue Rock on Friday night! Your old clothes with fringe, embroidery, and aztec prints can all be brought back for Cinco de Mayo. Support one of the local taco trucks around town. We have at least five local taquerias and family restaurants that would love your business! Pull out your blender and whip up some homemade margaritas with your friends or educate your classmate next to you who still thinks the day is about Mexican Independence. You can even catch a Cinco de Mayo-themed lunch in Holmes from 11 AM to 2 PM to kickstart your Friday night festivities! Have fun this Friday, Wildcats!
