Alumna Kinya Alexander, Life after Graduation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CUA chapter.

Kinya Alexander is sure to be one of DC’s next entrepreneurs. As a recent graduate, she taking advantage of every opportunity she is given. Working for a private equity firm, The Carlyle Group, and expanding her creativity with DC Tech Startups, Kinya still finds the time for other things that matter in her life: family and love!

Her Campus CUA: So to start off, where are you from? What year did you graduate? What did you major in?

Kinya: I’m from Plainfield, NJ and I graduated in 2013 with a BA in finance.

HC: Great! And what have you been doing since graduation?

Kinya: Two months after graduation I got a job as an accounting associate at a global private equity firm called The Carlyle Group, where I support the senior and staff accountants during quarter and year end by prepping financial statements for our investors. In my spare time I work with DC Tech Startups and I was able to build up my creativity more and I’m not working on a financial planning initiative.

HC: That’s awesome. What organizations were you apart of at CUA?

Kinya: I was apart of the Black Student Alliance for three years and I was also in the President’s Society. I was a Pryz management employee as well and went on a mission trip with Campus Ministry.

HC: I know that you were able to start a Charity Basketball Event as apart of the BSA. What made you want to start this?

Kinya: I really wanted to bring the DC, Maryland and VA colleges in the area together for a fun, competitive event but also to raise money for charity and I felt that basketball would be the best sport to be able to do that.

HC: Most memorable experiences at CUA?

Kinya: My most memorable experience at CUA would be my mission trip to Costa Rica my sophomore year. I didn’t know much about myself and wasn’t really applying myself in school and the experience made me realize that there were so many people who were progressive and applying themselves in their studies and they were decent, good people. Being around that atmosphere influenced me to become a better person and a better student.

HC: So being that Valentine’s Day is this weekend I thought that we could discuss the topic. Do you have special plans?

Kinya: Well I don’t really have plans, but it’s my dad’s birthday and I plan on pampering my dad and making his day special.

HC: Too cute, so if you were going on a date for Valentine’s day, what would be your ideal date?

Kinya: My significant other cooking dinner for me in a cabin-like environment with a fireplace; When we do gift exchanges I would like little things that he picked up on about me, something small ya know, nothing too elaborate, but an intimate situation.

HC: How romantic! What would you advise the single ladies to do in honor of Valentine’s Day?

Kinya: A group activity, go to the spa and pamper yourself; order flowers for and anonymously send them to your close friends. Strip-class lessons or even a single ladies dinner, maybe a potluck and hit the town at night.
