A Rundown of Boulder’s Best Coffee Shops

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

Midterms may be over, but that doesn’t mean the daily grind of homework, studying, and quizzes has stopped. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to work solo, are planning on meeting for a group project, or just want a place to sit down and cross some things off you to do list, look no further because I’ve done the hard part for you! Keep scrolling to discover some of Boulder’s best coffee shops.

Drogo’s Coffee Bar- 1520 Euclid Avenue

Located on the Hill at the corner of Euclid and 15th, Drogo’s is actually connected to a Catholic Church. While I was apprehensive of this at first, no one tried to rope me into their Bible study or convert me to Catholicism. Instead what I discovered is delicious coffee, friendly people, and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for studying. Drogo’s has a few different rooms to choose from, and the carpeted floors and stuffed armchairs make it an incredibly cozy place to hangout. If you dislike large crowds, Drogo’s is usually the least busy on weekday evenings.

Alfalfa’s- 1651 Broadway

Although you may know Alfalfa’s for it’s organic, local products and steep prices, it actually has a surprisingly nice cafe area hidden in the back of the store. Although outlets are hide to come by (make sure to bring your laptop and phone fully charged), there’s a wide selection of tables to choose from and free WIFI. The crowdedness of Alfalfa’s is hit or miss, sometimes Sunday mornings are packed and other times it’s like the store has turned into a ghost town. Either way, check out Alfalfa’s if you’re tired of running into college students and want to browse the grocery aisles after you finish your work.

The Cup Espresso Cafe- 1521 Pearl Street

Let me preface this suggestion by saying that I have never, ever seen this place not crowded. Even on weekdays. Good thing The Cup has a back room with additional seating as well as outdoor seating. If you wander past the hustle and bustle of Pearl Street you’ll find this little gem, tucked between a brewery and women’s boutique. The coffee is good, the service is great, and the breakfast sandwiches are to die for. If you’re craving something sweet, they offer a large selection of pastries and handspun milkshakes. Keep in mind that due to how many people frequent The Cup, you may want to bring along some headphones or make this your go-to spot for catching up with a friend, not studying.

Wonder Press- 946 Pearl Street

Wonder Press is located at the other end of Pearl Street and is pretty much the exact opposite of The Cup. All neutral colors and simplistic decor, Wonder Press looks like something out of an influencer’s Instagram feed. This coffee shop also has a wide array of house-made juices and smoothies as well as offering paleo, gluten-free, and vegan snacks. Wonder Press is the best place for those who are looking for a quiet atmosphere and offers long community style tables in case you need to work collaboratively.

Starbucks on the Hill- 1352 College Avenue

If you ever hear a student say they’re headed to Starbucks, this is probably the Starbucks they’re referencing. While the service is fast, expect a long line on weekends and a pretty crowded store 24/7. While it’s possible to find a place to sit, it may not be the seat you wanted. If you’re someone who’s easily distracted or picky about where they do their work, definitely skip this shop. If you’re looking for convenience or somewhere to meet with friends without being shushed, this is the place for you.

Starbucks on Baseline- 2400 Baseline Road

The underappreciated sister to the Starbucks on the Hill, the Starbucks on Baseline offers a much different vibe than its counterpart. Although this location is often overlooked, it boasts the same qualities as any other Starbucks- decent coffee, quick service, and a clean store. While this Starbucks can still get crowded, it’s never as noisy as the one on the Hill or in the UMC. And if you still don’t feel like fighting for a table, get your coffee to go and cross the street to study at CU’s Wolf Law Library.

Innisfree Poetry Bookstore & Cafe- 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue

Sitting on the Hill right directly between Insomnia Cookies and campus, Innisfree is a local coffee shop offering a vast selection of drinks, pastries, books, and knick-knacks. Although it fills up pretty quickly on Tuesdays for Poetry Night (every Tuesday night at 7pm), the rest of the time it’s only about half full. Be aware though that the shop is pretty cramped, so you may have to snag one of the tables outside. If you’re looking for a laid back coffee shop to knock out some homework, this is the perfect place.

Now that you’re a little more familiar with the coffee shops around Boulder, go check one out for yourself! You may just find your new go-to study or hangout spot.
