I’m always on the hunt for new shows, specifically comedic shows with short episodes to lift me through the dark days of burnout. I was introduced to Adults last year, and I loved season one so much that I binged it in a week. When I found out it was being renewed for season two, I was so excited, and it did not fail to deliver. Have I already watched it twice? Yes. And I will be watching it a third time. As always, spoilers ahead!
“Hiccups (Body Go Crazy)”:
I feel like I have to start with this because I genuinely have had this song stuck in my head for the past week. It’s such a stupid song that’s weirdly catchy and I just loved this whole episode. Adults has a way of being serious in very unserious situations. For example, Carly (Samir’s long-term girlfriend) decided to pursue her childhood dream of being a pop star and essentially drop her current career track for dentistry, and it’s all because Anton told her “A dentist is just a singer who hasn’t grabbed a microphone.” He doesn’t even remember telling her, and throughout the episode we see how his careless words of advice have led to ruin for a lot of other people. While it is hilarious to watch the very short-lived pop-star journey of Carly and Issa, it also made me think a lot about how important perspective is. Our interactions with each other leave an impact, and it’s important to be aware of what we’re saying and who we’re saying it to. With Carly, I feel like we all reach the point of burnout where we wonder why we’re even doing this, but it’s important for our loved ones to keep us grounded. Overall, this was a great silly episode that I was able to connect to my own life.
“Room Swap”:
I HAD to talk about this episode because it threw me for a loop. This season was definitely all over the place, and this episode was full of chaos. Regarding “Room Swap”, there’s so much to get into, but my two favorite moments were: the “weird little guy” moments and Zack Carlos’ (Issa’s crazy ex-husband) appearance. Watching Issa’s “weird little guy” as she went out with Billie was definitely difficult, but it was also part of what makes this such a comfort show for me. It’s just weird and fun and I love it. As for Zack Carlos…I LOVE this character. If you haven’t seen the show, I need you to go watch his entire part of this episode because he’s so iconic. I could watch an entire show of just him, he brings the drama, the chaos, and the unexpected. He was in the episode for 10 minutes and in that time, he sang, tried to change the room arrangements, and had to be carried out wrapped in a blanket by a firefighter. He’s an icon, and those unexpected moments always get me.
Anton and Paul Baker:
You know…I love this show, but one thing I don’t love is stringing me along when it comes to romance. I’m sorry, I had to say it. This show ended season one with a little romantic moment between Anton and Paul Baker. I was so excited for this season, but I have to say they did string us along a little bit. Don’t get me wrong, we got some more flirty moments and the scene when Anton admits that he loves Paul Baker, which I fully supported and enjoyed. However, I felt a little bit betrayed when we didn’t get to hear the actual confession or the response. I absolutely love them both separately and together, and I’m glad we got more development and more interactions, but I just wish there had been more depth to all of it, especially at the end. Maybe in season three…
