I was scrolling through Instagram (as one does) and I came across a video of this woman saying that “if you can’t get out of it, get into it” and that honestly changed my brain chemistry. Is this what your frontal lobe slowly developing feels like?
There are days where we don’t want to do anything that we have to. You don’t want to do the reading for class, go to the gym, do laundry, cook, etc. And that’s okay! There are times where you simply don’t want to do anything and I am here to tell you that it’s totally valid. But I’m also here to say that when you especially can’t get out of it – get into it!Â
Don’t want to do homework? Play study beats in the background while you’re cranking out your reading and really romanticize it. You could pretend that you’re Rory Gilmore or I like to pretend that I’m Andy Sachs from The Devil Wears Prada to really get sh*t done. I personally like getting a coffee to make my study session at least a little more bearable.Â
You don’t want to go to the gym? Wear a cute set and play the best hype music you can think of. You don’t want to do it at the moment, and I totally understand that, but have you ever regretted a workout?Â
Especially as we get older, there are more adult things that we don’t want to do or are incredibly scary. I remember being terrified as a freshman thinking about apartment hunting for sophomore year. The apartment hunting process really intimidated me. So, what my friends and I did was make a fun day out of it!Â
We set a day aside to get coffee and bagels before we jam-packed our apartment showings into one day. We knew we had to do it if we wanted somewhere to live outside of the dorms, but that didn’t make it any less daunting.
On TikTok I’ve seen that a lot of friends in their mid-20s to early-30s meet up one night a month to do “administrative meetings” where they budget for the month, fill out taxes (if applicable), create grocery lists, meal prep plans, schedule maintenance, etc. while drinking wine. Doing it together makes the inevitable adult things in our lives a little more bearable. It seems kind of fun, doesn’t it?
My friends and I are all seniors. We all graduate college in May (technically I graduate in December, but that’s beside the point) and the big question of where we’re all going to go is looming over us all.Â
Will any of us have job offers? Do we want to stay in Colorado? What do we want to do with our lives? Those are the kinds of questions that we all suffer under the weight of. However, facing something that I know is inevitable with some of the closest people in my life makes it just a little less scary.
Life can be a lot. It can be full of beautiful parts, looming deadlines, and rough seasons. But it is what you make it. And whether I don’t want to do a reading for my class, go to the gym, or figure out what I want to do with my life – if I can’t get out of it…I’ll get into it.
