How to Make the Most of Fall When You’re Stuck Inside

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

In typical 2020 fashion, fall is looking a little different this year. Things have been monotonous and a little lonely, to say the least, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on having a great time during the superior season! Here are some fun things you can do with family and friends (safely, of course).

Pumpkin carving.

A classic fall activity, pumpkin carving brings fun and function together. Carving a pumpkin gives you a great decoration for the entire season, pumpkin seeds, and a bunch of recipes to use the rest of it. What’s not to love?

Take up crocheting (or just a fun hobby).

This one’s probably my favorite on the list. I’ve recently gotten into crocheting and it has presented itself as the perfect pastime! Just pick up some yarn and a crochet hook and you’re all set. You can crochet at pretty much any time and if you’re a fidgeter like me, it gives you something to do with your hands. There’s also an abundance of tutorials on YouTube for sweaters, hats, blankets, and anything you want.

Take a drive and look at the leaves.

Taking a drive without a real destination can be fun but even more so during fall! Get in the car with some family (or people you’re already quarantining with) and look at the leaves at sunset, you won’t regret it.

Make your favorite drinks.

Think of your favorite fall drink. Got it? Great, now think about how easy it would be to make it at home! Almost every drink has a recipe online that you could follow to make your own at any time. It may not be the same as Starbucks or your favorite coffee shop, but it will help pass the time and you’ll be able to have it whenever you want!

Cozy up in a sweater and read.

Another simple activity is to throw on your favorite sweater, make some tea, and read a new book or reread a favorite! It’s all the feeling of being in a coffee shop, engrossed in a novel while being safe in your home.

Plan a Halloween movie marathon.

Compile a list of your favorite Halloween and spooky movies and watch them solo, with family, or over Zoom with friends. You could even set aside a night to watch them all with blankets and snacks!

There’s plenty to do while still staying safe and practicing social distancing. Remember: all of this will be worth it when we’re able to go back to normal!

Samantha is an Editorial Assistant and Contributing Writer for CU Boulder's chapter of Her Campus. In her editorial position, she edits articles for clarity and provides guidance to other writers so they can improve their skills. As a contributing writer, she submits two articles per month, often writing in depth about social phenomena. Aside from Her Campus, Samantha is a senior at CU Boulder, double majoring in philosophy and sociology. She's currently working on an Honors Thesis in philosophy and hopes to go to law school after graduating in May 2024. She is involved in campus organizations like the Miramontes Arts and Sciences Program, the CU LA Program, and the Honors Program. This semester, she’s a mentor for learning assistants as an LA Mentor. Outside of a school setting, Samantha enjoys crocheting, reading, and writing. Overall, she’s very quiet, and her hobbies reflect that. She can usually be found with heaps of yarn or her nose buried in a book, silently enjoying her time alone. In addition to writing as a member of Her Campus, she enjoys writing short stories and pieces about her life. One of her biggest goals is to publish a book of stories and pieces that almost act as a memoir.
