Outside, that is. The sun is still bright enough to give us sunburns and the sweatshirt you’re dying to cozy up in is too hot to wear unless you’re in the library.  Sitting in the stacks staring out the window makes us long for summer again and napping on Norlin quad only teases us because in a few minutes, we have class.  Before the cold weather and midterms really set it, crank out your studying, lace up your hiking shoes and make it to the trails while you still can.    The mountains don’t have snow on them just yet so treat yourself to fresh air and give your glutes some final hiking.

If you’re without a car and looking for a shorter hike, head up to Chautaqua by taking Baseline toward 9th.  You will come to the parking lot on the left.  From here you can wander up a multitude of trials.  My favorite? Royal Arch. Start at the ranger station, walking up the Mesa Trail to the Bluebell shelter.  Follow signs for the Royal Arch. It’s only about one mile long but you’ll be gaining a lot of elevation. Bring some trail mix and a camera!

If you’re lucky enough to be able to sneak away for the weekend, grab a car-full of friends and check out Rocky Mountain National Park.  This coming weekend, the Buffs are playing away so it’s the perfect opportunity—you won’t miss out on anything in Boulder.  The National Park is about an hour from campus.  Once you’re there, head to the ranger station for hiking and even camping suggestions. If you’re feeling adventurous, conquer one of Colorado’s 50+ 14ers.    A fairly easy one is Gray’s Peak.  Impress your friends and summit two peaks in one day; Torrey’s Peak is only a few hundred yards up from Gray’s Summit.  Leave early in the morning, making a necessary stop at Starbucks in Golden and cruise down on I-70 toward the mountains.  Get off at the Bakerville exit, 221, and drive South, keeping an eye out for Steven’s Gulch. Drive up the dirt road until you come to the parking lot.  Be sure to bring lots of water and snacks!

Whatever your fitness level or time availability, don’t let the stress of another semester get the best of you…just yet. Treat your body and your mind to fresh air.  You’re only here in Colorado for so long—now take advantage of it!

Anna is a Sophomore at the University of Colorado at Boulder studying Journalism in the News-Editorial track. She is very involved in her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, where she is curerntly the Vice President of Development. Also within the Greek Community, Anna writes for The Odyssey, a Greek newspaper. With a spare moment, Anna loves capturing the beauty of everyday through photography, embarking on mini adventures, skiing the peaks, and sipping chai. Nothing relaxes her more than tying on her running shoes and exploring the mountain trails and soaking up Colorado's sun. A recent addition to the Her Campus Team, she is excited for what is to come!
