Comparing New Maybelline Products to My Current Makeup Products

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

I am no makeup expert. Most days, I don’t bother to put on makeup, and the days I do, it is the minimal amount. If you see me wearing makeup, I am probably wearing concealer, powder, blush, eyebrow gel, and mascara. I might have some eyeshadow or lip gloss on if it’s a special occasion. I’ve been using the same products for years, and haven’t tried a new product in a long time. However, two weeks ago I decided to try out some Maybelline products. I picked up some products which fit into my very minimal routine. I wanted to compare these new products to the ones I always use. Here are my opinions on each product.

INstant Age Rewind Multi-Use Concealer

This product really intrigued me. The product comes out of the top into a fluffy brush-like head. I applied it to my under eyes and on any spots I would normally cover up. Using my beauty blender, I blended the product into my skin. For this product, I was looking for coverage and longevity. Let me tell you, it delivered both. The product covered my dark eye bags well and covered any imperfections I was looking to conceal. It blended out nicely, and stayed put all day. The concealer I normally use has the same benefits, but the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer comes in at a much more affordable price. If I’m in a pinch, I will definitely be picking up this product again. I’d give it a 9/10.

Lasting Fix Banana Translucent Setting Powder

I was confused by this product. Why is the word banana in the name? Does it smell like bananas? Is it made with bananas? I normally dust a small amount of powder all over my face to keep me from getting too oily during the day and to keep my concealer in place. The Lasting Fix Banana Translucent Setting Powder didn’t seem to do much for me though. It was just a translucent powder that didn’t give me much color, and my face still got oily towards the end of the day. I will probably stick with my tried and true powder for this step of my makeup routine. 3/10.

Shadow Blocks Eyeshadow

This packaging was very cool. Instead of a palette, the three eyeshadows come stacked one on top of the other in a cube. I chose more neutral, tan and brown colors for the eyeshadow stack. The top shade is a pretty all over nude color, the middle is a shimmery bronze color, and the bottom is a chocolatey brown color. Being a person who doesn’t do makeup that often, this product was great for me. The placement of the colors seemed pretty straightforward with the nude going all over, the brown in the crease, and the shimmer on top for a fun night out. I wasn’t overwhelmed and was very confident putting this eyeshadow on. My typical eyeshadow palette has lots of options, but if I need a straightforward, easy eye look, I will be reaching for the Shadow Blocks Eyeshadow by Maybelline. Overall, it’s a solid 7/10.

BrowFast Sculpt Gel

I was blessed with naturally thick, dark eyebrows, so I have never needed to fill them in. However, in between eyebrow appointments, I do need to use some sort of gel to keep them tame. This eyebrow gel comes in a small, easy to carry package. The application was easy, and within seconds the gel started to dry. When it was fully dry, though, my eyebrows were not hard. With my typical eyebrow gel, the gel dries to an unnatural consistency. With the BrowFast Sculpt gel, my eyebrows still feel soft, but they aren’t going anywhere. I may like this product better than the one I’ve been using. It deserves an 8/10.

Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara

If one makeup product is going on my face in the morning, it is going to be mascara. I love the way it opens my eyes and makes me look more awake. With that being said, I am very picky about what I use. However, I was impressed with the Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara. The wand is much different than the one that I currently use but it seemed to give my eyelashes a more voluminous, wispy look. I didn’t have to fix any clumping issues, and there wasn’t fallout below my eyes by the end of the day. Again, this may be a new favorite and could be interchangeably used with the mascara I currently have. 10/10.

Lifter Gloss

Who doesn’t love a glossy lip to tie together a fun look? I gave this gloss a try, and it wasn’t quite what I expected. I’m more of a fan of the natural gloss with little to no color in it. The Lifter Gloss provided a subtle pink shade when used in moderation. Too much of the product made my lips too bold for my liking. So with that being said, a little bit goes a long way. I would love to try a different gloss by Maybelline that is more natural. However, I do like the product and would consider using it for a night out. This product gets a 6/10 for me.

And there you have it. I finally tried out some new makeup products, and it was honestly a fun way to play around with my look and how I express myself through makeup. I found some products that work well for me and that I will be rotating into my routine more often.
