Nine Reasons Why Cucumbers are the Best Snack

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

The two greatest pleasures in the world are drinking a cold glass of water in the middle of the night and eating a snack when you can’t sleep. But what if I told you that you can combine the two? Cucumbers are the best of both worlds and more! Here are the top reasons why cucumbers are the best snack.

Water

Whether you’re coming back from a long day of hiking or a long night of partying, being a CU Boulder student means you need more water than your average Joe. The best way to combat this is to up your water intake, which cucumbers can aid. Cucumbers are actually around 96% water (and 100% delicious).

Crunchy

Think about all of the most popular snacks. Cheetos, M&M’s, cookies, and potato chips all have one thing in common – they’re crunchy. However, none of those will come close to the satisfaction of hearing the snap when you bite into a cucumber.

Tasty

You may be thinking, do cucumbers even have a flavor? This is because cucumbers are usually part of a larger dish with more dominant flavor profiles. By themselves, they are reported to have a light, mildly sweet flavor which is more enjoyable than the overbearing and unsophisticated taste of mainstream snacks.

Adaptable

There isn’t really a singular official ‘cucumber dish’ because they’re in everything. But you can put diced cucumbers in poke or slice them and dip them in soy sauce. Not to mention cucumber feta salads are literally the most underrated snack ever! This only further proves that cucumbers are superior to all other snacks.

Refreshing

Snacks tend to leave you sleepier than energized but cucumbers are the sober equivalent of a glass of white wine on a hot summer day. If you’re hungry just take a cucumber out of your fridge and you’ll feel like you can conquer the rest of the day.

Healthy

Only 1 in 10 adults get enough fruits or vegetables. Incorporate cucumbers into the day as your main snack and you’ll probably bump yourself up to the 10% if you aren’t in there yet. (You could also argue that it’s low-calorie but it’s 2022 and calorie counting is so 2010s.)

Easy

Though there are many variations of cucumbers when snacking, they are ultimately prepackaged by their skin and tasty on their own, so they require no preparation. You just eat it. Whether you’re walking or you’re studying at Norlin (please don’t actually eat a raw cucumber in Norlin, you’ll scare away the touring high schoolers), cucumbers are ridiculously easy to eat.

Not messy

A lot of people ban foods from their cars and beds because they have a tendency to spill and get all over the place. This is not the case with cucumbers. If you eat cucumber in bed you won’t have to deal with cucumber crumbs at night.

Look cool.
