Ever since transferring to Cal State University, Fullerton, my goal has been to be a part of as many clubs, internships, and other extracurricular activities as possible. However, I quickly learned that it can lead to burnout.
Through trial and error, I discovered several tools and strategies that helped me stay balanced while having fun.
Google Calendar.
I actually didn’t start using Google Calendar until this semester (I know, crazy). Over the summer, I realized I was going to have a lot on my plate with an internship, a leadership position, and other commitments. Google Calendar has been a game-changer in seeing everything I have to work on throughout the day and making sure I don’t overbook myself.Â
I highly recommend going on TikTok for Google Calendar color templates that match your aesthetics and make daily planning more fun.Â
Notes App.
Hot take: The Notes app is completely underrated. We tend to overlook how helpful the Notes app is. It’s a simple tool integrated on your phone and laptop to quickly jot down notes. I use it to remember any assignments or tasks to finish. During my internship, my notes app became my best friend for staying on top of my work.Â
Overcommunicate.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned after being in a leadership role on campus is to overcommunicate. Whether it’s a club position, internship, or job, you’re usually working with a team or someone is counting on you to finish a task. If things start to feel like a lot or you need a break, it’s so important to overcommunicate with your team. Let your team know early on, but it’s important to put your health first when dealing with a lot.
Also: ask questions. Overcommunicate when you don’t understand something. You might feel annoying, but asking questions can help you save time (and stress) when you aren’t sure about something.
Take a break.
This is the most important of them all. When you feel overwhelmed and stressed out, take a break. When I start to feel tense or mentally drained, I love reading a few chapters of a fantasy book, as it helps me escape from reality. I also love to do my nails when I feel stressed, as it’s therapeutic to me. My friends always joke about how my nails are a different color every time they see me.Â
So, find something you love to do, whether it’s taking a walk, scrolling on social media, or taking a nap to feel refreshed.
