As the weather begins to cool, leaves start to change color and pumpkin spice returns to coffee shops, it marks the start of the beginning of fall. With October coming into full swing, we need a perfect playlist to begin this fall season and get into the spooky spirit.  What a better way to prepare for the season than with five albums that are worthy of being left on repeat. So, grab your scarves, favorite book and turn on some tunes!

1) “Skinty Fia” – Fontaines D.C.

Although released in April of 2022, “Skinty Fia” by Fontaines D.C. is one of my favorite albums to immerse myself in the fall season. The album features haunting vocals from the band’s lead singer Grian Chatten, with lyrics centered around self-reflection, identity and political activism. This is perfect to listen to while out on a chilly evening walk for some quiet introspection.

2) “Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You” – Ethel Cain

Ethel Cain’s third studio album, “Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You,” creates a vivid picture of midwest fall through her music and evocative lyrics. Her album evokes somber themes that create a narrative which follows her persona Ethel Cain and her toxic and all-consuming love for Willoughby Tucker. This album’s dark sound is perfect for the season.

3) “Bewitched” – Laufey

Released in September of 2023, this Grammy-award winner brings a lighter and warm feeling for the season. With her jazzy vocals and warm orchestral compositions, Laufey’s album Bewitched makes the perfect for a cozy day in fall. Songs like “While You Were Sleeping” and “Serendipity,” both coincidentally homonymous to two iconic rom coms, capture the magical feeling of falling in love.

4) “Siamese Dream” – The Smashing Pumpkins

It would not be a fall albums list without the inclusion of “Siamese Dream” by The Smashing Pumpkins. Released in January of 1993, this album encapsulates the feeling of the autumn season. This brings the perfect grunge vibe for the rainy fall days and perfectly captures the feeling of the crisp autumn air.

5) “So Tonight That I Might See” – Mazzy Star

Released in October of 1993 Mazzy Star’s album is a perfect album for the season. The album even features the song “Fade into You,” which is featured in the classic fall show “Gilmore Girls.” Star’s album slows down our pace, allowing for the appreciation of the season around us. The music feels almost dreamlike as the guitar and vocals blend together for an atmospheric sound.

Enjoying the holidays and the cooler weather should always start with the perfect music. As the chill of the autumn season settles in, these albums will help set the mood and prepare you for Halloween and Thanksgiving festivities and allow for the chance of internal reflection and nostalgic remembrance.
