An Ode to Gilmore Girls: Lessons from a TV Show that Helped to Change my Life for the Better

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cornell chapter.

It’s the fall in my senior year of high school and my mom and I are entering the gruelling task of trying to find a new TV show to watch. I spot Gilmore Girls on the screen, and we decided to try it. I have heard so much about the show, and I was interested to see how good it actually is. Little did I know that this show would make my mom and I closer, as well as teach us both valuable life lessons.

1) Life’s too short to not do anything you put your mind to.

Wear your funniest outfits (preferably not to a meeting with your daughter’s head master), agree to weekly dinners with your crazy mother, and even steal a yacht  (but try not to get caught).

2) Don’t be afraid to ask your parents for help.

If there’s anything that I have learned from this show, it’s the importance of relying on your parents when you truly need them.

3) Coffee truly is the “essence of life”

There’s not an episode where Lorelai does not mention her love for coffee. As a fellow coffee fanatic, this is one lesson that I will continue adhering to.

4) Education is the most important thing in the world.

One of Lorelai’s main lessons for Rory was the importance of getting an education, whether this was at Chilton, or even when she made it to Yale. No matter what relationship, grandmother issue, or best friend drama Rory was going through, she always stuck to the goal of getting her Yale degree.

5) Snow truly makes everything magical

This one’s for you, Cornell. Living in a place where it snows more than the sun shines, it can be easy to forget the magic of snow. Adopt a Gilmore mindset, take a stroll in the first snow of the season, and see the beauty in the season.

6) Moms are the best

We’ve come to the most important lesson of them all. I am lucky to have my own Lorelai, and even an amazing Emily in my life. I wouldn’t trade them for the world, and just like Rory, I am happy to call my mom my best friend.
