Emily Walker ’13: “Lucky Stiff” Actress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cornell chapter.

Emily Walker ’13 loves to act. In Risley Theater’s latest production, “Lucky Stiff,” she plays Rita la Porta, “a bit of a nutcase from Atlantic City, New Jersey” who “spends the entire play attempting to get the 6 million dollars back that she embezzled from her husband for her lover (who she accidentally shot).”

For a girl from SoCal, this role might seem like a bit of a stretch, but Emily is, in relative terms, a seasoned pro–she’s been doing theatre since she was 12.

Emily emphasizes the collaborative nature of Risley productions. In addition to acting in “Lucky Stiff,” she also helps with costumes and box office. “Everyone in the cast is helping out in different ways to really bring the play together,” says Emily. “Risley productions are amazing because the time commitment is a little more relaxed, and you can still put on awesome shows. This is actually my second Risley show this semester (Much Ado About Nothing was this past March). It’s a bunch of students coming together and making something wonderful.” [Below: Emily with the director of “Lucky Stiff,” Danny Bernstein]

Another plus to Risley Theater shows? “Anyone can get involved,” Emily says. Always wanted to direct? Apply to do a show! Last November, Emily played Janet in the traditional Risley production of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which next year she will direct. If you want to try your hand at tech, you can contact any of the directors of members of T-Sub (contact info available at http://Risleytheatre.org). And if you, like Emily, want to act, there are several auditions at the start of every semester.

Emily also finds other ways to be in the spotlight. She modeled in the Cornell Design League fashion show two weeks ago, of which she says, “It was awesome!” She also loves planning events, both in Risley and elsewhere. “This past February I planned VD Ball 2011: Bad Romance,” she says. “I’m also an active member with the Schwartz Ambassadors (student support of the Schwartz Center).”

Just the Facts
What is your favorite class and why?
I love my Acting class (THETR2800). All the classes offered at the Schwartz Center are fabulous and I would suggest that everyone take one at some point in their Cornell career. The skills you use aren’t only for performing, but can be directly related to everyday life.
