Chauncey Walter Jenkins

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cornell chapter.

Chauncey Walter Jenkins

Year: 2011
Major: Hotel Administration
Hometown: Richmond, VA
Relationship Status: “In the pad of bachelors”

Favorites:
Class:
Class? What’s that? I kid. Creative Writing is my love interest right now.
Book: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Movie/TV show: Really anything Tarantino. Pulp Fiction is my joint. I don’t watch TV, I watch HBO.
Music: Right now I’d say Swedish Pop Music (Bye Bye Bicycle and The Knife in particular)
Quote: “We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely. All art is quite useless.” – Oscar Wilde
Beer: I don’t usually pick favorites, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

Chauncey Jenkins (otherwise known as Chance Fischer: rapper extraordinaire) is most happy when he’s making people laugh. “I’m just a ridiculous human being,” he says. “I’ll laugh in the face of Death, unless Death has bad breath, then I’ll cover my nose. I have Lyger blood.” As President of The LINK: Black and Latino Men’s Alliance, Head Delegate of the Ivy Council, Vice President of After Six Ensemble, and At-Large Representative in the Student Assembly, the Lyger-blooded Chauncey is similar to Charlie Sheen in that he is no stranger to the spotlight. But unlike the Tiger-blooded Sheen, Chauncey’s career in entertainment is only about to take off. Chance Fischer’s work was mostly unrecognized until he recorded his first mix as a junior at Cornell, after which point some big names in blogging like The Smoking Section and Everyone Loves Hip Hop started to pay attention. Last semester, he recorded another EP called the Lucky Libra, the first song of which (“Freedom”: http://chancefischer.bandcamp.com/track/freedom) was voted one of the top 100 songs of 2010 by The Smoking Section. So far, he’s opened for Nickelus F – who is soon to be featured on Chance’s next tape – Chiddy Bang at the Noyes Recreational Center on West Campus, Big K.R.I.T., Freddie Gibbs, and Smoke DZA. Chance says that he’s been writing since the tender age of seven, but didn’t “get serious” with his craft until he turned twelve and began battling with other rappers in his neighborhood. In an effort to avoid cultivating a stereotype, Chance kept his interest in the realm of a hobby. Lucky for us, this deep-thinking sweet-talker now embraces his talents and is one famous Cutie to whom we should all keep our ears – and hearts – well attuned.

Activities: Making people laugh, having moments of deep thought in the bathroom, writing profusely, trying to balance spoons on my nose, rapping with stage name/nom de guerre Chance Fischer, trying to live a balanced life, playing chess, reading philosophy
How you spent your summer: I taught kids Spanish as they pointed and laughed at me
What you look for in a girl: Sugar, spice, and everything nice, with a kick of jalapeño.
Dealbreakers, when it comes to girls: Girls that are snow days: they don’t have class and want to be the center of attention
Proudest accomplishment: Writing a letter on behalf of my little sister so she could go to the same high school I went to
Best thing about Cornell: The Hotel School. Nah, I really like the fact that you can do pretty much anything you want.
Worst thing about Cornell: Paralysis of choice
Something not a lot of people know about you: I’m a supervillain that takes kids’ cookies
How much of the 161 list have you done so far and which are you most excited to do: Quite a bit. About 70 of those things. I’d really like to urinate on the Law School though.
Thoughts on graduation: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”
Thoughts on Nelly for Slope Day: Heart attack – not in the good way. Cool Kids get two thumbs up though.
Future prospects: Becoming a Grammy award winning recording artist/songwriter. Obtaining an MFA in Creative Writing. Becoming a CEO of a boutique hotel that caters to people interested in music. Becoming a columnist for GQ. Being a good father.
