Top 8 Moments of the 2015 Grammys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

So the 57th annual Grammy Awards happened last weekend, and some AMAZING things happened. This year had an insanely long list of musical acts, including Beyoncé, Sam Smith, Hozier and Annie Lennox, Ed Sheeran, and many more, but some of the most entertaining things came in between the performances. Let’s try to break down the most groundbreaking moments from last Sunday night.

1. Kanye West interrupting Beck

Wow, this was quite the moment! Let’s set the scene for you. While Beck was accepting his award for Album of the Year, Kanye decided to be a bit funny and repeat his infamous “Imma let you finish” gag from the 2009 VMAs with Taylor Swift. While Beck was still stepping back from hugging Prince (a grand moment in itself), Kanye walked up the steps of the stage, presumably to announce that Beyoncé should have won, before laughing and retreating back to his seat. Beck begged him to come back, before finishing his speech, but the whole crowd was laughing off Kanye’s prank. Apparently, Taylor Swift walked up to him immediately afterwards and told him he should have gone all the way through with his stunt. Glad to see Swifty has moved on from the awkwardness from 2009!

2. Beyoncé DIDN’T win?!

Moving past the funniness of Kanye’s faux-interruption, it was all started because Beyoncé didn’t receive the award for Album of the Year. Fans everywhere are in an uproar and so are we. No shade to Beck, he had a great album, but Beyoncé put out her album with zero promotion and still sold the most out of anyone in the category. Her self-titled album had the biggest cultural impact of any of the other albums of the year and she empowered women worldwide. No one’s disputing Beck’s artistry, but come on, really?

3. Sia’s Performance

So we’re all familiar with the young girl who dances in Sia’s music videos, Maddie Ziegler, and this year we got to see her in a live performance at the Grammys, but this time with a special guest dancer at her side. We’re still not super sure what Kristen Wiig was doing out there, but she looked great dancing alongside Maddie in a nude leotard. The greatest part of Sia’s performance was her appearance in the background, standing away from the crowd, facing a wall. Sia, who is extremely shy and suffers from Grave’s disease, has always tried to stay out of the celebrity spotlight, but last Sunday she treated us all to an amazing live performance, putting aside her discomforts.

4. Brooke Axtell’s spoken word piece

During the show, a pre-recorded video clip of Obama discussing domestic abuse was aired, followed by a spoken word piece by Brooke Axtell and Katy Perry’s performance of the ballad “By the Grace of God.” Axtell, a domestic violence survivor and longtime activist against sexual abuse, delivered a moving speech highlighting her experiences with an abusive boyfriend and how she overcame her trauma. This moment during the awards brought social media abuzz, especially since several artists nominated for a Grammy this year have problematic lyrics and pasts when it comes to domestic abuse.

5. Sam Smith wins four Grammys

Sam Smith had an amazing year, taking home four Grammys, including Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Following in the same footsteps of the great Taylor Swift (VMAs 2013) and Adele (Grammys 2012), Sam thanked his ex-boyfriend during his Record of the Year acceptance speech for inspiring his Grammy winning album. “I want to thank the man I fell in love with last year, thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys!” You tell him, Sam!

Other priceless moments include:

6. All of Taylor Swift’s dancing

7. Madonna’s strange background dancers

8. And Prince’s general existence

The Grammy’s are always an exciting award show, but the Oscars are coming up soon and are sure to bring us even more great celebrity moments! Be sure to check out the link to get caught up on all of this year’s nominees!
